Kcta Drag Strip Reunion

I know that most people that frequent this forum do not live in the Kansas City area but this is going to be a neat event. This drag strip has been shut down for many years. It was VERY popular in the 50-60-70s.


Sun - June 8 - 12:noon -4pm. I435 & Front Street (follow the signs west to where the finish line is). Bring you muscle car, super stocks, dragsters. Drive em or tow em. Bring back the memories.

I attended the reunion event at the drag strip today. The strip was in the west bottoms of Kansas City MO. The track is gone now but the 400-500 people that turned out to see the cars, old photos, trophies and other stuff when the track was in operation. My 63’ was the only one there and got a lot of attention. I met Don and Tony Shaffer that together run the Obsolete Missile. Don’s 63’ impala has run best of 9.90s with 1.30 60fts. Iron headed four speed car. Tony builds the engines. I got to pick Tony’s brain about my 409 plans. Don showed me photos of his car back when he ran at the track running against the likes of Terry Prince. There were NO 409s there. It was a great show and got to mingle with a couple of guys that know their 409s.

Sounded like that was a nice nostalgia event!

I just got back into Columbia Sunday. Yesterday (Monday) I was in the KC area and stopped by Day Automotive, which is Tony Shaffers' machine shop. He had a picture of no less than 11 sets of Z-11 heads lined up in his shop (taken last year). There was a set of them on the bench, next to a Z-11 bare block stuck in the corner. Wish it was my corner!

I picked up a transmission from him and toured his shop. He had left for the day, but I plan to be back next week, possibly bringing some parts over for him to look at. This guy is good, and has lots of racing experience with the "W" motors. He's the shop that did the two 348/350 motors in the 1961 Chevies pictured in the recent Chevy Rumble :)
