Lots of cool pictures on this site. Not much "W" stuff but worth a look anyway. http://www.mts.net/~red67/intro.html

Wow same cars as we would see on the weekend and only the names have been changed. With the exception of the Z16 which I still have not seen in real life up close. I still have an engine sitting and waiting to find a Z16 body to match it with but no luck so far.

Fantastic Jim :clap
Brings back a lot of great memories.......when I was 13 (1959) my older brother took me to Deseronto (Mohawk Drag Strip) in my dad's '59 Olds and won B/SA that day.
Still got the trophy. :D
I'll send this over to Mike Kirk, he's got the fever as well.
BJ :cheers

Look at page ten, about 2/3rds down. Wasn't a good day in my life. I wasn't there, but the car was. This is the first place I have ever seen color pictures of our old car. They were sent to me, but I didn't know where they came from. Now I know. Thanks

Fred, I went looking for a picture of your black 63. When I couldn't find it I started reading about the King Camaro funny car that went up in flames. It was only after reading that Dean was the driver that I realized that it was your car.

Jims,
Thanks for sharing the pictures, I really enjoyed looking at the site. Fred, I'll go back and check out the picture of your car.
Musclecars, my best buddy has one of those Z-16's, he's had it since the late 70's. I would think a body would be very difficult to find, good luck
Merry Christmas guys

here's one of my friend and former boss Malcolm Durham. his Z11 car was nearly unbeatable at 75-80 dragaway in maryland summer of 63.

some where i read when malcolm started racing a 1964 chevelle, it had his 1963 impala engine in it. i have always wondered now that the z11's are very collectable, did the original engine ever get put back in the 1963?

Dick Harrell did the same thing. Put his Z-11 motor in a Chevelle. Heck, that was the only thing you could do after GM pulled out of racing. Then, they started putting the 396 in the Chevy ll , untill the 427 came out. You had to be imaginative to race GM in the mid 60s.

Malcolm started out by driving watermelons and other veggies to washington from northcarolina.
the 64 chevelle was called "strip blazer 2" it was probably his 5th car.
alot of those guys including him and ronnie (sox) started out racing a 60 pontiac or olds. but when the 62 409 cars came available, they all jumped in 'em.
because malcolm was a salesman at hicks (chevy in wash dc) he was able to purchase the 63 (stripblazer)aluminum car. those guys all had more than one engine. they took the cars apart and modified them from day 1. it took several powerplants to keep the car raceready. when the 63 car was sold to Jerry hotchkiss, it may have had the original engine in it? but i seriously dought it. same block? maybe. maybe i'll ask him next time i'm over to his house. those cars werent rare at the time, you had to get rid of them every year so they wouldnt lose much value. and to stay competitive. the following year they became OBSOLETE. it's only now that they have any real value. i got rid of all my Z11 parts for the same reasons. everything i had came from malcolm, (wish i had kept them so i could sell em at todays prices)
at the time i worked at malcolms shop, these cars were everywehere. several aluminum impalas came in for various things we did like supertuning or some modification. i did alot to a certain 62 aluminum belair htp. i only wish i knew now to hang onto some of that stuff.
there was a ZL1 camaro out in the parking lot. the engine was in the attic. a chimney had fallen on the 69 and it was smashed a little. coulda got the body free. i stalled and it got hauled off. when i first took my 63 red ss 425 car to work is when he told me about his Z11 car. he had a current vega prostocker at the time. most people teased me for having a 409. malcolm told me to keep that car. he was right and 28 years later, i still have it. he's one of the hall of famers who have autographed it for me.
malcolm and his friend gene daniels had matching 70 LS6 green chevelles. the first thing they did was to change the emblems to 396. i had a blue 70 LS6 at the time, i raced him, i never won.
yes, he wishes he had the 63 car back, but is not willing to put out that kinda cash. one of it's other owners restored it and malcolm drove it at the superstock reunion several years ago.
