Well we got the psoitraction unit installed, put in the new fuel tank and 3/8 line, then moved on to begin running all new lines for the brakes. I am sitching over to the dual master cylinder and have a question or two:

The supply line that runs to the rear brakes (the long one along side the center of the X frame) looks to 3/16 inch. The master cylinder itself (the version with both bowls of same size, from a 1969 drum brake setup) has 5/16s inverted flares along the sides of the master cylinder. Is there some male fitting that threads into the 5/16 hole and allows a 3/16 pipe to exit?

Sometime ago I purchased the entire brake kit for the single master cylinder setup from Phil Reed. I am using some of those components in the switch to the dual set up. Some of the brake lines are 1/4. some are 3/16. The 1/4 pieces are for the front brakes. I ran the 3/16 long line down the center of the car and hooked it into the new lines for the rear. I haven't connected the rear up to the master cylinder as yet, and was looking into possible options (see question above).

Does this seem like I'm doing the right thing? Lots of different sizes to contend with and want to make it right and also make it look clean. Running adapters (3/16 to 1/4) works, but it looks kinda bodged (sorry if that's the only way to do it and that's how yours is set up:)). I was looking for a cleaner way to do it and be safe as well.

Here's a shot of the posi in place along with the new gas tank. If all goes well tomorrow (we get the brakes figured out) we move to cut a hole for the 4 speed and install the 409. Then we ship it off to the muffler shop for a new system. It seems like things are finally coming along :).

Enjoy!

Tom, I used a brake line kit that was designed for dual master cylinder and disc brakes. It has TWO lines that run across the front of the front crossmember. One of those lines goes to the right front brake and the other joins up with the line that goes to the rear brakes. The original GM setup only used a single line that went to a "T" fitting that directed fluid to the right front and the rear axle. I can't remember where I got the kit from but it had all the fittings and connectors I needed. I thought I got it from these guys... http://www.mpbrakes.com/5570chevydisc.htm But that might not be right because I can't find any line kits on there site.

Jim is right , I bought a stainless steel kit. It comes with 3 lines , 1 for the left front, 1 for the right front, & 1 for the rear. All 3 lines connect to the proportioning valve & are pre bend. I believe the rear line had an adpater that screwed into the rear port on the proportioning valve. I got the brake line kit & proportioning valve kit from www.classicperform.com

Hi Tom,

Yes, there is a steel SAE fitting that allows a 5/16 port with a 3/16" tube.
Going from memory, it can be found in the Weatherhead catalog.

You are doing the right thing. Since the primary brake line from the master to the car was used for front and rear brakes, the diameter was 1/4" to allow proper flow.

Once this line met with the "T" - it was reduced to 3/16" for the rear brakes.

In your case with the dual master - the front and rear lines will be 3/16"
