I found some old texas license plates at the antique chevy junkyard thats in fairly good shape some surface rust but other than that nothing wrong with it. i got them for 9.50 for both of them.

Im wondering what color white would i use for the base and was the black numerals/letters flat or gloss?

Is their a specific steps in how they painted the plates to get the paint to last so long that could be duplicated?

Going to restore them and take them to the dmv once finished to get them reissued for the car and use them be better than the ones that say classic on there.

the plates were dipped in the base color, then the letter color was rolled on. I would guess that most prisons had the same brand paint available to them. but who knows what that brand or type it was? my guess would be enamel with lots of lead.
do the Texas plates have an embossed expiration date on them? did the tags you have expire before your car was even built?
I was one of a small group of marylanders who approached the DMV about the use of old tags. we pulled very hard and finally got them to agree $$$$$$$.
All states had different policies, but Md. tags used to expire every year. in fact, they have embossed along the bottom: "expires 3-31-63" or whatever year it was at the time. so, considering that my car was built the 4th week of may '63. it's first tag would have expired 3-31-64 and that just would'nt look right. I've seen many a car here at local car shows or cruise ins with the "wrong tags on it" but if i bring up this point to the driver, I'll just sound like a jerk.

Hmmm,, I wonder what Pa's view on using old plates is? (my best guess would be NO) :D

I don't know about the real old plates but going back to '76 for sure, ours had a reflective type paint here in Pa. Sometimes it was the background, sometimes it was the letters.

Whatever type of paint it is, it's pretty tough stuff!

In New York , you can use the old plates but you can't repaint them. Better check with your local DMV.

My 62 Belair is registered with original 1962 minnesota license plates.
They are treated the same as Collector plates or Antique plates.

You can have your plates professionally done.
It does cost a bit but boy will they look good !!
A set of unrestored good shape plates will cost about the same as the restore cost but won`t look as good !! ,,, dq

Is there a place where you can buy plates for a certain state/year?

I see vendors at swap meets selling plates all the time.
I have even seen brand new vintage plates that were never issued.
Otherwise any place you can find used old plates try ebay.
Minnesota will allow you to register the old plates as long as the letters and numbers are not in current use on a new plate that is already in use.

well the way i heard was in the 60`s here in tx they were replaced every year didnt have stickers or anything and the plates i got say TEXAS at the top the code in the middle. and below the numbers was 1963 centered.

And here their treated as colloctor or antique plates. i guess ill email the dmv and see if they will accept repainted ones cause these are fine just got some rust in one corner on one and the other around the 1963 on the other one

but i dont know i might just restore these to hang in the garage and get 1964 plates so it matches up since im going with cragar ss rims up front. probly look wierd putting it back to this one old picture i got of it where it had 64 plates, and the cragar ss rims up front.

if it was possinble i would like to have custom made 1964 plates and get them to say the same thing as the ones in the picture but i doubt they would look the same.
