I've followed some of the ebay listings for this Tach.. Big bucks for good units. I am looking for an above average tach and sender for the 1962. However, my question is how were these Factory Sun Tachs attached to the steering column of this car? Any details or pictures? would be appreciated.
P.S. I've gotta take some time to learn how to attach those "avatar" pictures.

The 61 and 62 tachs were fastened with two chrome, trim screws, to the left side of the steering column. There was a black bracket on the back of the tach cup. The cups and brackets are available reproduction. I might suggest finding a Sun "red football" tach that was an original 7000 rpm unit and having the face redone to look like the factory 409 units. Contact www.williamsons.com for ALL of your tach needs. I bought an NOS 7000 rpm tach and sender from them for my old 61 SS and it was super nice!! I think they can even recalibrate a 5000, 5500, 6000, etc to a 7000 rpm. They use silk screening, not stickers, for the faces. They also convert the senders to solid state. No more batteries!! My tach had been converted and it was great! Best of luck.

Thanks for the information. Great contact for Sun Tach products. I like the upgrade to solid state etc. This is exactly what I was looking for.

Although my Impala is a 4 speed on the floor, the steering column has a sleeve without holes for trims screws to attach a tachometer.
Would it be possible to drill 2 small holes in the steering column sleeve in order to attach the tach? If so ..what diameter drill / trim screw and what length of trim screw required. What about placement of tach on the left side of the column. How far back down from the signal switch? Any details, references, or pictures would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I don't know if I can help here, I have no knowledge of the 62's but I have had a 61 or two.
I currently am restoring another 61SS and I take lots of pictures so I'll post a couple that may help as I figure the 62 tach was probably mounted in the same location as the 61.
Ross.........The 61 bracket was chrome, of course it was different from the 62 in that it didn't have the stamped gussett to reinforce it. The 62 bracket is repo'd, I don't think the 61 is. Also, the tach in my white 61SS was attached with hex head machine screws, I bought the car from the original owner and he said the tach had never been out of the car. :dunno The tach in my blue 61SS had been removed when I got the car but the holes appear to have fine threads in the holes. In other words, I don't think a trim screw was used to attach the tach to the column.

I've got a red interior in the current 62' as well. First 62' had a sun tach (later version) mounted on the top of the steering column.

Thanks for the pin point precision of the side mounting area. I like the 2 views and particularly the one with the tape measure. I'll be able to measure up the location to attach my tach quite nicely now.
Thanks for all the effort and the visual aids guys. Very much appreciated. :bow

RCE1962, ever thought of an aftermarket tach? moon makes a pretty good one. i was going through the same decision process a few weeks ago and previous thread turned me on to the moon 180. it is very similar in appearance. in my case, my car is far from being close to stock, 62 ss originally with a 250 hp 327 and now with 63 409. so it was worth it to save the $200 or so. if you go that way i'd recommend buying direct from them. they seem to have the lowest price in town.

Has Moon got a website? I put in 'Moon Speed Equipment' in my search engine but came up empty.

Try http://mooneyes.com or just type in Mooneyes in your search engine. Tach looks pretty good.
