The 60 air cleaner lids are a little hard to find. They have a single oval snout. Not the tapered snout like the 62 and up lids had. If you wanted a chrome one, try and find a lid from a 64 GTO with a single 4-barrel. Its the same as the early chevrolet oval snout air cleaners except the word "FRONT" is embossed twice on the top of the lid, and its chrome from the factory. Only pontiac and possibly cadillac and maybe some buicks had this lettering. If you have the original carb, you'll need to find an air cleaner base with the 4 1/4" opening. Probably more than you wanted to know about air cleaners!!!
Ebay is your best bet. I have a few auctions scoped out with some of the stuff you need. I can help you there.
If you want to make a dual snorkel, like Mr. Jimmy was talking about (like a 400hp 409 or a 380 hp 409), I have some great reference photos I can send along. Snorkel placement is crutial. I'm in the process of making one!!

Hello Impalaguru, I,ve been collecting up the parts to build a 2 snorkel air cleaner for my "61". Would be great if you could send me some pics and info on doing this. I,ve noticed in photos of them that the snorkels have an unusual position. Thanx Stew

Not sure I know what you mean by lid. My 60 air cleaner has lid and sides as
one piece and the bottom as the other piece. :help

Russ,
Is your car, by chance, a Canadian built car? The Canadian chevys have a air cleaner like you describe. It has a flat, disc-like lid with the base and side being the lower part. They also have a single, round snorkel. I'll try and post some pics of what I am talking about and I'll put up a pic of a non-Canadian air cleaner for a 60.
Stew,
Sure thing. I'll post some a little later. The 61 dual snorkel had baffles behind each snorkel. I think that the 62 380hp lid didn't have these baffles. The chrome 400hp lids for sure didn't have the baffles. If you REALLY wanted the baffles (I'm not sure even what they are there for) for a 100% correct lid, look for a pontiac lid from the early 60s. I have a poncho lid from a 63 or 64 326. It had the single oval snorkel and the baffle.

Ok, I imagine I've thoroughly confused everyone on these silly air cleaners so hopefully these pics will explain better than I can :D
The black air cleaner is of a 59-61 348 and 283 single 4-barrel air cleaner. This is a Chevrolet air cleaner. The Chevrolet air cleaners DIDN'T have the words "Front" embossed in the top if the lid. The picture of the SINGLE SNORKEL chrome air cleaner is of a 64 GTO single 4-barrel air cleaner. Has "FRONT" embossed on either side of the snorkel, on the top of the lid (kinda hard to see).
The next pictures of the chrome dual snorkel air cleaner are for reference if someone is building a 400hp lid. If you see a lid like this, remember that the 409 lids have 16 dimples (the little indentations arround the outter edge) and the 64-68 L-79 Chevelle lids have 15 dimples. On the Chevelle lids there is an edge that is squared off above one of the snorkels. The air cleaner pictured is a 63-65 400hp 409 lid (16 dimples). For the 400hp lids, the drivers side snorkel is CENTERED on one of the dimples and the passenger side is a little off centered.
I don't have any exact measurements as I don't have an original air cleaner. If someone has a factory 400hp lid, I would be VERY appreciative if they could share the measurement from inside tip to inside tip on the snorkels and also the measurement taken at the base of the snorkels. The second measurement would be best taken with a soft tape measure, against the air cleaner housing.
I hope these pictures help!!!

Ross, I have an original 400hp air cleaner on mine. Let me know exactly what you want measured.
