Hey guys

I've got a rebuilt 348 on a stand in the shop that has not been run or turned over for almost a year. :takethat

About this time last year it was fresh and started in the car and run twice for about 10-15 minutes each time. The car was then transported and almost came off the trailer when the rear straps broke. :cuss
The oil pan was banged and the oil pump pickup busted. :cry

I want to get this thing ready to install and start but want to turn it over a few times by hand and then prime it before starting.

What do you recommend I do before turning it over by hand. :help

Thanx
bj

Providing you fixed the oil pan and pickup issue, I would prime the oil system with a priming tool/drill, then rotate the engine over by hand and prime every quarter of an engine revolution. This will ensure oil reaches all the parts.

You could shoot some oil down each cylinder if you wanted before turning over too.

Also squirt some oil into each cylinder before you rotate the engine,,,dq

I also have a rebuilt 409 that I'm getting ready to lubricate and install. I have printed the article about starting a new motor on this site and have a question.

I have a tool to run the oil pump with a drill. The article said that this will not lubricate the upper part of the valve train. I need a distributor shaff to do this, but I don't see any way on the Mallory distributor I have to carry the oil. How does the distibutor lubricate the valve train ??? :dunno

Your help and guidance please. Don't want to distroy the motor... :help

The distributor shaft re-directs one oil passage to the other with slots or grooves from the lower to the upper path. Without the shaft the oil never gets to the top.

So then the question is how do I lubricate the upper part of the motor if I don't have a distributor shaft to work with ??? Looking for quidance..... :?

Hey, "Nut", welcome to the Forum. I've seen you post many times over in CT in the !961-61 Discussion Thread run by Ollie.

I really enjoyed following your long and detailed "resurrection" (it's not sacrilegious to say that during Easter season, is it?) of that gorgeous Black over Red '62 Bel Air Sport Coupe :). It gave me lots of confidence to attack my own bubbletop even though it is quite corroded :). As are all good things, that one is still a project in the making :).

Glad to find that you are preparing to switch over to "W" power! If you need any help with questions and such, you are in a good place for requesting advise. Let us know if you need anything (like a pre-oiler) and we'll try to help out.

Best,
TomK
