View Full Version : Water pump tricks?

I picked up a "rebuilt" 409 water pump at the local NAPA store some months ago, and did not notice it at the time, but it's nose has the "wobbles". Figured that out when I was trying to line up the alternator to it with a new belt. Checked and it was way out of true, someone had apparently banged on it a bit to try to get it better (probably at the time of rebuild?), but to no avail. My plans are to snag parts off of a core laying around and see if that corrects the problem.

While I've got the back cover off, I was wondering if there are any "tricks" that anyone recommends to get improved flow through the stiock cast water pump? I am using standard pulleys and this setup is on a stroker engine.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Best,
TomK

Tom,I remember reading a post by dq and he says his rebuilder uses a different inpeller for better flow. :dunno

Phil Reed's rebuilder Quoted this statment
The dimension on the back side of the impeller to the steel backing plate is critical too. If the impeller is too far back...you will not have proper water flow thru the pump. Too far forward..and you won't have any flow at all.
