Can someone give me the measurement on the 63 rear ends, from housing end to housing end? Looking to put a 12 bolt under my car, and need this measurement. Think I might have found one. It's 54 1/2" end to end. Not talking axle flange to axle flange, housing ends.

Fred:

I happen to have a housing laying on the floor!!! Overall length is 55 7/8". Outside of flange to outside of flange is 55 5/16"

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Phil, that's what I needed. I think it will work.

Next question, is there anywhere I might find the weldments I would need to weld to a 12 bolt to work with a stock set up?

Fred, whats a weldments :dunno I'm glad to see you go with 12 Bolt,a good choice,I like both of my 12 Bolts :D What gear will you be running?

Weldments are the brackets for the controll arms, and the Panhard bar. Gear ratio will be either 4.56 or 4.88.

Fred,I don't think anyone sells weld on brackets.I think the only way your going to get any brackets is to cut them off your old housing,or find some place to make some.Denny Ford said he cut his lower brackets off his old hosing and made his upper mounts.I would e-mail Denny and get some more info. You could call Mosher and see if they have any brackets :dunno Are you going to use the stock 12 Bolt axles?

I know Moser has the brackets. They can fix me up with a F**D 9", no problem. They have the upper bracket for the right side they will put on a 9", they just won't do a 12 bolt. You have to weld on the cast part on a 12 bolt, and they don't want to do that.
I have a ton of pictures from under Denny's car. And have some from Allen George's car. Both 12 bolts, both with 2 upper arms.
I'm going to use Moser 33 spline axles, and probably a spool. Asked Moser about 35 spline axles, but they said there was no use using 35 spline axles in a 12 bolt as the axles would be stronger than the gears. They will do 35 spline on a 9". I'm just having a problem putting a 9" under the car. Would like to keep it all Chevy, and IHRA has some classes it could run in, but require all GM componets. Won't allow a mix. Could use a Dana 60, but that's a Chrysler rear end. Heavy, too, but stronger than both the others, from what I'm told.
Kinda funny how some of these drag racing orgainizations are. Can't mix brands on a car. Look at NASCAR. They all use a 9" or variation of it. Strange now makes a 9" carrier that uses a 12 bolt ring and pinion. Raises the pinion to get away from the low pinion placement that the 9" uses. That's what robs the horse power. A 9" will use about 3% more HP than a 12 bolt. I know, nitpickin.
Any way, that's my thinking. Might be all wet, too!!!!!

Fred

I have never looked at putting a twelve bolt in one of these cars but can't the existing upper mounts be used for the control arms and a bracket be fabricated to mount the other end to the frame?

I'm just having a problem putting a 9" under the car. Would like to keep it all Chevy :clap I thought same way,I don't like to 9"in a Chevy.I have the Mosher 33 spline axles and spool in the Camaro and I have Strange axles with C-clip eliminator kit in the 57.

We'll get this thing worked out yet. Going to talk to Moser again, tomorrow. This thing can't be that complicated. If they can do a 9", they have the brackets and the jigs for that, and should be able to do a 12 bolt, you would think.

At least Moser can install the lower brackets and you can use Denny's idea on the the upper mounts.
