Jim, Im a new member and am curious about your car count for racing. Do you guys race every week or just specialty races? My partner and I race a 62 ChevyII 409 stroker every Friday night , 8 months season, 10-15 runs per night. Weve been averaging 250 runs per year for the last 8 years. I just went through current motor (rings and bearings) and hope to have another trouble free season. Knock on wood. We race at Redline Raceway, 40 mis. east of Dallas. The money around here is all eighth mi. racing. Our little Nova runs 6;40s at 108 mph That is from a 10;1 481 built originally for a street application. Im in the middle of assembling our motor for next year. 13:1 aluminum rod motor with some good parts. Looking for 6:00s from the car with that motor, but you know what they say.....The parts always cost more than you think and the car never runs as fast as you think.

Well Ron, my 60 Impala runs 8.9 1/8th, not up to your times. But that means I get to grin 2.4 seconds longer than you! :D. Really, I wish you could come to Norwalk with us, we are going to have a "GOOD TIME!" If it's money your talk'en about I'll start the ball rolling! I'll bet Fred $10.00 I can beat him through the first 60". :brow

Welcome to the site Ron! :beerbang Your car sounds like my idea of a really cool car. If I'm not mistaking 6.40's in an 1/8th would be in the 10 flat range through the 1/4, Way to go! :bow It must be nice to have a car that's that quick and that dependable.
Last year we had a 348/409 convention in Kansas City. There must have been at least 150 348/409 cars there and alot of them were dedicated race cars that are regularly raced. Unfortunately the drag racing got rained out. :cuss
So seeing how it's unlikely that there will be a formal convention this year some of the guys decided that the next best thing would be to all attend the same event. So we are going to meet up at the Blue Suede Cruise in Norwalk Ohio. http://www.norwalkraceway.com/ This event is held at a dragstrip. Some of the guys that will be racing are out racing a fair bit and others, like me, don't race very often. Unfortunately, alot of regular racers are going to be at other tracks because they are commited to attend there regular racing series. The list of 348/409 cars that will be attending keeps growing and we're hoping for more, so it's looking like it's going to be another fun event. There is a camping area right at the dragstrip and aparently there's good shower and washroom facilities so alot of us are going to camp out there. Anybody's welcome to join up with us! :cheers
By the way, some of the guys are also trying to gauge how much interest there would be in doing another get together at a dragstrip in Topeka Kansas later this fall, about the end of Sept. I think.

Ron,Welcome to the site. The only drag car in the group is the 409 Powered Dragster.Norwalk Dragway is putting on a Nostalgia Car Show and Swap meet. They have Nostalgia drag cars for exhibition runs and a Rock & Roll band at night. They are offering free timed runs down the dragstrip to the Hot Rodders.Of the 15 members I've meet 1 member, this is a good meeting spot for us members to do some benchracing and Talk face to face instead our computers. It also will a good time to watch some of our members, see what they can do with there Classic Cruising Machines in the 1/4 mile :D

Ray,are you going to red light to beat Fred in the first 60 inch's :D

I cant imagine how much fun it would be to sit around the campfire and swap lies with a dozen or so 409 guys. Im invious, maybe we can bring the Chevy II up in that area later in the year. It would be a long haul from Texas but I know it would be a blast. Ya'll have a good time in June , But take it easy on those old gear-boxes.

Ya Ron, if you can post a picture we'd love to see it. Also I'd be interested in knowing more about your car, like what kind if cam, what gears, tranny etc. I really want to build up a gasser style 55 Chevy but I have given some thought to a Chevy II. I would like something that's reliable, fast and fun. And not too pretty. Something like the one in the picture, only I might spend a bit more on paint, and with 409 power of course. I love the video clip of this car on this page... http://www.gassermadness.com/Thompson03/index.htm

OK Jim,I can see now I'm going to have to pull aside and twist your arm a little bit and say shoebox at Norwalk :D

Jim,the reason I put 409 in a shoebox, was to be different and I wanted a Classic 409,installed into a Classic Shoebox and that's why I named my 57 twice as nice

Welcome Ron, You asked if any of us race our cars on a regular basis. My wife and I do. We are competing in the IHRA Summit Super Series in top ET. We have a rear engine 409 powered dragster. The motor is stock and runs consistanctly 9.80s in the 1/4 mile. Between the points races we race for fun and trophies just about every weekend from the middle of April to it snows or the tracks close. We would love to see your car, maybe later this fall if there is another get-together. Good luck and again welcome.

Ronnie Russell
04-08-2005, 02:23 PM
Tony, Thamks for your communication. We ran our current motor in an Undercover rear engine dragster for two years, it ran 5;50s in the eight. The owner (my partner) got lonely for the Nova, so he sold the dragster and bought the Nova back. We won some races with the dragster, but he just wasnt comfortable in it. Could you send picture of your car? ronnier@chilitech.com Thanks, Ronnie Russell

Thanks for posting info. Jim. I dont want to mis-lead people so let me clarify. I sold my half share in car to my partner, Barry Taylor, two years ago, He retains my name on car because we are best friends and I build and tune the motors. Barrys dad was Buddy Taylor from Garland, Tx..Buddy owned and drove original z-11 Impala , sponsored by Friendly Chev. Dallas,Tx. Buddy put z-11 motor and trans. in 62 Chevy II in 1967 and matched raced in the southwest. The guy who bought the Impala , put 327 -4sp. in the car and it was resold and lost track of. Barry has spent all of his adult life searching for that car to no avail. We built our 409 chevy II in honor of Buddy. Barry has great pictures of Buddy from 1963 racing the z-11. Thanks again for your help, Jim . Now its Fri. afternoon and time to head out to the strip. Sunny and 77 deg. What a great day to be alive.

Jim,
I'm planning to drive up Friday for the day and hang-out with all the 409ers. Since it's not too far, I'll probably drive back late and return Saturday with the family in tow. May drive one of my long-term projects for the Saturday cruise if she's ready for the road. Perhaps I can con a buddy into bringing his '62 Impala (a 327 car). We have two youngins who just can't stay interested in cars (or anything else) for very long, but we'll see how that goes for the rest of the show. Maybe we will try to stay Saturday night at the camping area. Looking forward to meeting everyone. Just wish I had a 409 to bring. (Or even a 348!)

RPO,thats good news,me and all the members will be happy to meet you and your family.I'm sure your youngins will be fine,it sounds likes there will be lots to do.This will be my first time to Norwalk, but my friends at work go to the Super F!!D Show and they say it's a Top Notch Dragstrip. This also will be my first time to meet all the members,I've meet one member at the Super Chevy Show in Michigan last year. What kind of car is your long term project?

Ray, you are in charge of NAME TAGS. I want name tags for everyone in our group. I'll not have another deal where I hear all these people say I was there, and I can't remember meeting them. We need enough to put on each day. I want to remember EVERYONE at this show. If I lose to Ray, though, I might want to forget being there :help

Jim,
The project is a '72 Olds Cutlass. All of my Chevies are gone. My job takes me away from home a lot (USAF), and most had to go because I just travel too much. The last was a '72 Monte Carlo big block project. Also had a '71 Nova, and a '66 Impala SS (396). A choice '64 Impala SS (mom's) got away before I could do anything about it. Still looking for a '62 or '63 409 car.

That I Already Know, And, To See The W-Cars Race!! Regards:"ww".

Wow, it looks like this Blue Suede event is really heating things up! I just looked at my calendar and saw a block of time available early June. Hope I can keep that open. I need to go visit my Mom and Dad back in gool ol' Cleveland, and Norwalk isn't very far from that. Might find a flight out there for the weekend.

If I put a name tag on, would some of you guys give me a ride in your car? Sounds like it will be great weekend of fun in the sun :) :) :).

Cheers!

Jim, what is the closest airport to Norwalk that has airline service? We ought to know that so if someone wants to fly in, we can tell them where is best. Also, if someone does want to fly in, we can make arrangements to pick them up. I wouldn't mind going to the airport to make a pick up.

You will come through Milan from Michigan and it is definitely a speed trap. Five over in that town may get you a ticket and they sit right at the city limits so people who think they are leaving town get caught.

JimK-

I'm waiting until midsummer to mention it again. The only risk is being able to find a place to stay where we can all gather, but that's certainly not a show stopper. The VAMP series at Heartland Park would welcome us from what I have been told. We just need to wait until people can make their plans closer in to the date.

Next year, 2006, I think Phil has a good one sketched out too.

Fred, I think it would be best if as many members as possible bring portable gas or charcoal grills, that way we can be assured that we will have enough cooking space and can all tailgate together. Marcia and I have our eye on a SS, gas grill from Lowe's, it's a portable unit that will hold about three or four large steaks. How about it guys, can everone bring a portable or full size grill? Jim, great on the generator/ converter! Maybe for one of the nights we could order in as many Pizzas that it would take to feed all the hungry 09ers? We'll be there sometime late morning, early afternoon on Friday also. We have a grill and generator that we will be bringing. We still are not sure where we all are going to meet. I've talked to some friends who have raced there many times. They tell me that the pit area is huge and would hold all of us. There are also 2 camp grounds, one with hook ups and one without. I understand that the one with hookups is already filled so if we are going to bein the campgrounds, it would be the one without the hookups. Because we are racing, our vote would be for the pit area. At any rate, let us know. Sounds like this will be the event of the year! :clap :clap

I'm hoping to meet up with the guys going in Friday morning. Me and the other Jim that was at the convention just bought a used motor home today. :beerbang
It's getting a safety check but we hope to pick it up tomorow. It's got a generator and a power inverter so assuming one of them works okay we'll be covered. It's got a big fridge so we can keep the beer cold. :beerbang We will also bring a small barbeque. If any of you guys is an amateur musician like me, bring your instrument. You never know, after a few drinks we might want to play a few tunes. :beerbang

Denny, you call and we will get the gates opened. I have flown in there. You can get in through the airport, too. and, it's cheaper!!!!!! Is the Pittsburgh deal only Saturday? If so, come on over Saturday night. You come, we'll be there. Whenever you can. Friday turned out to be a bummer for passes. Do hope you can make it sometime.

i hope to roll in on friday afternoon. might (need a little nap) to stay up late and bullshoot. plan on bringin my mini bike, the big grill (4 burner stainless monster with side burner) and big (6000W) generator. we can make a beer run in my 63 and a grocery run in somebody's driver. (maybe the 57?) friday evening and cook it up. whoever needs power, bring a few heavy cords at least. and you can plug into mine. i'll have the trailer open and a ten X ten open style tent set up with lights and chairs. hopefully the folks will migrate among the campsites within the "BIG W" compound. i say we camp in the pits and when i roll in, i'll be looking for Ray's 60 chevy. hoping someone will save me about 20X50 feet worth of ground. what else do we need to cover? i'll be sleepin in my trailer, if you spot me, i'll be pulling a dark gray 24' Pace shadow with ladder on front. truck is a "butt ugly" 99 pewter colored GMC ext cab 4X4 with maryland tags and black bed cap. I'll certainly be lookling for a parking spot. thanx for anybody's help who gets there before me. dont worry, i have no musical talent at all. i'll just listen.

Someone suggested using cell phones to co-ordinate things. Maybe we can exchange numbers a few days before we leave for Norwalk. I'm hoping to be amoung the gruop that arives early friday. I figure we can unload our cars and try to take up as much real estate as possible. If nessisary we can look for a spot that's a bit out of the way. I think we're going to be in the pit area.

Fred has his car lettered, why not you Bob :dunno.Do it vinyl letters so you can remove the lettering if you don't like it

Bob, Mine is vinyl lettering. Doesn't hurt the paint, or so I was told. Letter it up. Looks good.

BOB i'd go with the lettering. check out jimmy stephens BUSTING OUT 63 chevy in the double issue of chevy rumble . those are handcrafted and painted magnetic signage , he puts them on for race day and it's one sweet looking ride. takes them off to just cruise around town. no damage to the paint .if you're interested in any thing like that i can get you the info from him.

jim i'll be at the good guys in ind. that weekend. last thursday night jimmy stopped by the house on his way to kil-kare for test and tune and he also said he was going to the good guys but i'll mention the blue suede cruise to him because he would love to show you guys what a real 409 runs like!sounds like you guys are just a bunch of bench racers.

JimKwiatkowski
05-10-2005, 10:56 PM
51T409,I'm just trying to recruit more 409's to the show.We would like to see Jmmy Stephens 409 run,we are all bench racers and thats not all,we also have some fast 409's racing.I thought the Good Guys Show was 10,11,12 of JUN :dunno

SS425HP
05-10-2005, 11:17 PM
51T, you are wrong on both counts. Good Guys is the following week end. And, if you think there are just bench racers on here, bring it to Norwalk. You might prove your point, but I think you might be surprised. I guess I'm not familiar with your car. I have been to the Good Guys for the last several years, at Indy. Think there were 7 409s there last year. Which was the one you are talking about?

If you do come to Norwalk, you will be around a lot of 409 drivers. There are some from out east coming in. Sunday for sure. I can think of at least one you might not want to tangle with. This is what makes it fun. Bring it on. A challenge!

Hope to see you at Norwalk. For sure.

I just booked a roundtrip flight from St. Louis Lambert to Cleveland Hopkins Airport. Plans are to arrive Friday afternoon, spend the day/evening with Mom and Dad, then either borrow or rent a car to make the trek to Norwalk Saturday morning. Will spend the night "camping" and hope to get some of that "409 magic" to rub off of you experts :).

Bob, the stick on decals like Fred used look great! :beerbang I could have made money at the convention betting people that the letters weren't painted on. They looked that good! Even close up.
And here's a picture of the "Bust Out" car that 51T409 was talking about. I thought it was painted as well. :cheers I'd love to see this car run. :cheers
