I need help to decode a suffix number. I'm told that the engine I bought over 20 years ago is a 1966 327. The Suffix code is Z1 6638526. I'm assuming that the first two digits represent 1966. 1966 -327 Horsepower ratings according to two web sites, show 325HP and 350Hp @5800 RPM for the "Z1" RPO. Is this also known as an L-79 engine? What should the intake and exhause valve size be for this engine?
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks

My info indicates a '66 "Z1" suffix code to be the famous 1966 Chevy II/ Nova L79 350 horsepower 327 engine. The L79 had 2.02/1.60 valves. If my memory serves me correctly the Chevy II small blocks, prior to 1968, used a unique block casting.

Richard,
I think you are correct about the Nova blocks having a unique casting, they did not have a provision for a oil filter cansister. The block used a spin-on filter because of clearance problems in the little Nova.

the blocks were cast so the oil filter boss could be machined "deeper" for filter clearance on pre 68 chevy II v8
