So I'm cruising at 1000 rpm in 2nd and see three police cars around two bikes. The two riders have their arms out as if to say "Whaaat?". One of the cops breaks into a run for his car. "I've seen this before ..." I am thinking. Watch him in the mirror as he closes in. Pull over into a parking lot even before the lights go on.
I know most of the local police and they are pretty cool. They do a good job and are very reasonable, but if you're sideways with them they can take care of business. The Chief is exemplary.
Busted. He thinks I am running straight pipes. No. Straight through mufflers. No, not that either. Borla XR-1's, 56 db(A) at 1000 rpm, real thumpy, but none of the high frequencies, state of the art noise cancelling. Yes, raps at 6500 rpm, but I don't do that in town.
The other cops show up and it's easy. They talk about the car with me and the one giving me the ticket is friendly too. Turns out that noise from the bikes down at the Rose (biker bar) has people up in arms. Well uh-huh - a HD with straight pipes twisting it up in town breaks teeth, no doubt. 99% of the bikes, and there are a lot of them, are courteous, but a few are making it hard on everyone. I mean everything has to stop when they fire it up - people holding their ears and glaring. So one warning, then ticket them for public nuisance or speeding or whatever. Sound ordinances are nearly impossible to enforce in court.
Until this goes to trial I can't drive the car without getting cited again. Unless the judge doesn't believe the photos, it'll probably be thrown out.
Anyone else ever get stopped for noise/mufflers?

yep.
chapter 90, subsection 16 excessive noise. I got 5 tickets in one month from the same cop when i was in highschool. He must have been jealous, cause he thought his 88 v6 camaro was all bad, and heres this kid with a 63 impala ss.
the car had a 10 to 1 327 in it, probally all of 300 hp. 2 1/2 flowmasters.
my dad pulled some strings, and got all my court dates on one day.
judge threw every ticket out, said it was harrasement.
the representing cop that was at the court date, told me after i was done, that he thought my car sounded good.

I got one a looong time ago, college. I had torn off a tailpipe on the gravel road on the way back to college. (Those roads are all paved now.) I guess it was too noisy coming off the glasspack. He asked me if I had Smitty's. Off course he happened to hear me while I was going up a hill with my foot on the floor, 348 with 3x2's :brow I wish I still had that car, 59 black convert, chic magnet.

before i got the 63425, i had a red 62 that i put a 12 to 1 427 L-88 into with the big hooker headers, 4 speed and 4.88 rear. i was in 12th grade. all the ford boys would gather at a certain place....and we would go over there and smoke the place up. one day at autoshop class, we opened the headers, then proceeded over to ford boy island, well, i didnt know the cops had the place staked out....so i ease over there, jump on the line-lok, dump the clutch, pull gears and go burning up the road...all are impressed so far, i came back around for a second try and they nabbed me. there was still smoke in the air and rolling out of my trunk and rip in the headliner. right in the cops face! there was no denying who did it. so the cop leans over, see the open headers, and tell me to "start it up and get on it" by now theres a hundred kids around, so i rev it to about 2500 and shut it off. he say's "you know what i mean" so i start it up... bust it to about 7000 and shut it off. the cop smiles....but only i can see him. he gave me a warning and followed me home!!!!to cap it up. he started to tell me about his 440 duster project.....and how cool my high compression open header burnout on school property was to see and hear........BUT, not to do that again......

The police can be cool when they want to be and if you don't poke them in the eye. I thought I'd just get a warning, but our city council is on a tear about noise. They just don't know how to go after the real problem without catching others in the net.
There are two places around town I light it up for a second or two where it's safe. They KNOW it's me and as long as I don't over do it, no problems. But this one was a little weird.
Good stories. Reminds me of the past.

Sorry to hear of the ticket Michael. A few years back I went to a cruise-in w/ open 3-1/2" dumps and the cops (usually tough) walked up to me and as I rolled the window down they stated: " OK, OK, Just don't do anything stupid! Enjoy the evening sir." :dunno
As the two walked away I overheard one tell the other: "Gray hair, out with wife, nice old car,...Buys him points." :scratch

one of the vehicles i built for myself while growing up was a 65 pontiac elcamino...very unusual and quite rare. well, i had to make it 4 wheel drive and put a cowl induction hood on it, and of coarse paint it red. i was used to getting pulled over all the time, but it was never loud even though it had a 400 smallblock with headers, duals and a tunnel ram and 2-4s.
i sell a bozo my harley to help pay for this project.
one evening he calls me... it wont start...and he's stupid.
so i drive down there, push it and jump start it. no big deal right...(he has left the key on and drained the battery) so, off he goes...i get in my nice quiet truck and here comes the cops, truly barney fife types cause they pull me over. hand em my papers and ask "whats the trouble?" "we got a complaint about a loud motorcycle" i then ask, shouldnt you be looking for a motorcycle? "one just went that way" (as i point the wrong direction) :brow
"YOU BEIN A SMART ALEC BOY?" "no, this vehicle is quiet. no noise voilation, no speed violation and i'm tired" what kinda contraption is this thing boy? a ranchero?" once i got blamed for havin a ford that was it...i was hot.
i snatched my papers out of his hand, told him, "look dick tracy, the bad guy got away and you got nothin to do but harass and insult me, leave me alone." I took off easy expecting them to follow. i was heading for the police station. they did'nt follow. JERKS.

Considering the amount of tire smoke I have put into the atmosphere, I have only earned speeding tickets. :D

Here is a trick I heard to get out of a ticket. In Nova Scotia you have 24 or 48 hours to provide proof of insurance or drivers license if you don't have them on you when you get stopped. This guy I know hides his insurance card when he gets stopped for speeding. The fine for speeding is like $300 here but the fine for no insurance is $2000. The officer goes for the big money charging him with no insurance and usually ignores the speeding. The next day he takes his insurance card into the R.C.M.P. to prove he had insurance at the time of the ticket and the charge is dropped.
Of course I prefer the not speeding method to stay out of trouble.

1967, I'm driving my '66 big block Corvette down the interstate, sidemounts, Casler cheater slicks, pulled over by State Trooper. He asks for license/reg/insurance card then tells me the exhaust is to loud. So I tell him it's a stock factory exhaust, so he says it's an "off road" exhaust, so I tell him what do expect them to call it, "super noisey" exhaust?. Again I tell him it's stock and every Corvette side mount Corvette has the same thing. Next it's bald tires. Now I get out of the car and we're both behind the car between my car and his. I tell him that according to New York State law, for inspection, the law states that the "two grooves nearest the center must be a minimum of 2/32nds of an inch deep", look it up I tell him. If he wants to cite me I'll roll a tire in the court room and have the judge read the law. If the two grooves are the only ones so be it. So he says, "it hasn't got a groove in the center". So I look at his car and sure enough the tires have 6 grooves, and none in the center. I point this out. GRRRRRR!. So he gives me a ticket for an unsafe lane change (even though he HEARD me and didn't SEE me (he was going in the opposite direction). I've got a couple more but let's just say that a Corvette with side mounts can be heard a LONG way off at night!.
Anyway..................there is a law that the cop used to cite you and that law gives the particulars. Plead not guilty and as for a "bill of particulars", they MUST give that to you, and it's your RIGHT to ask for it. You'll then have a better idea if your car is legal or illigal. There may be a decimal reading and so on. I don't believe the mufflers your running will be illigal and if you don't get THIS ticket thrown out you'll be at some cops mercy all the time your driving the car. Be nice, be polite, ask politely, but be asssertive and tell the prosicutor your car isn't making excessive noise. PAy me now or pay me later.
PS: next time run Flow Masters.
