I went to Lebenon Valley Raceway yesterday and watched a new Dodge Neon race a Corvette. (stock class.) The Vette ran 12.4,. The Neon ran , well , 11.90 .

Is there no justice in this world? :cuss

Just wondering....HOW do they get a stock Neon to run 11.90? :?

It's that new SRT . It comes stock with an intercooled turbo and a bunch of tricks. That car ran. I felt bad for the owner of the vette. I know he went home and made a couple of FOR SALE signs.

The turbo cars are depressing. I have a cousin who owns a 89 Trans-Am with the V6 Buick Turbo motor. He drives 120 miles to the drag strip, clicks off a string of 12.80s , turns his a.c. on and cruises back home. It does almost makes me give up. Someone needs to put a couple of "hair dryers" on a 409 and get our respect back.

as for the turbo 09, the "respect" came and went...............

pretty sure a hairdryer on my new 4 cyl ecotec cavalier would lay waste to my 425 horse impala.............("it's close without it") sad but true.
even the new chevy catalog boasts nearly 1000 hp from the 2.2 4 Banger with all the goodies. Mr. Lingenfelter got hurt and died from testing this bad new cavalier.

I don't care if they have enough power to launch into space, my old Chevy's will always be better than theirs. :D

Some of you guys worry about speed too much. Remember, no matter how fast you make your car go, someone else will always be faster. Not worth blowing up a 409 over IMO. (spoken by a non race type guy) ;)

Bob Walker Jr.,,,,,,, Thanks for the picture. I assume that is a Lamar Walden engine. I had no idea it had been done. Now I dont have to wonder about it. 1,500 hp satisfies me. Bobs 409,,, You are right, I do get caught up with performance figures too much. A 4cyl turbo will never have the prestige of a 2 4bbl 409.

Compairing our 40 year old engines to one that was produced in the last 5 years or so is not fair! I try to make my 09 competetive with other engines that were produced "in the day" If I happen to smoke a few Mustangs in that process,,,, oh well! :dunno

Not only are these little imports and four bangers fast, they are reliable enough to drive everyday to work, to school, out at night, and still get good fuel economy.
Can't do that with the old chevrolets.
I would not want to own or drive something that little, but the truth can't be denied.

It wasnt a red neon was it?

theres a girl in my club, central mass dragracers (www.cmdrclub.com)
shes got a neon srt, 408hp at the front wheels. last season she was 12.20`s.
she went to vette vs. viper day at NED, and proceeded to spank some vipers

her trap speed is over 120mph!

im totally against fwd, but i give her respect.

And the Neon weighs what ? 1800 lbs

compared to most GM cars that weight near 2 tons?

By the way, Lamar said at the 409 convention the turbocharged 409 was the most powerful engine he ever built- he talks about it on the convention dvd

Put that Neon engine in a 3800 lb. car and you have yourself a mid 13 second dragster at 99 mph.

no doubt about that, Ronnie......now, dont get me wrong guys, i'm not defending the "onion" cars.
I own one because i really dont want to drive my 09 car or 454 truck or v-6 jimmy to work everyday. i will say that i have a vehicle for every purpose. but being a "super sport" kinda guy, when i decided on a "disposable car" i at least got the Z-24 cavalier. the performance and handling is amazing. (after all, it is a Z-car right?) and i'm not ashamed to be seen it. any sort of jap crap or even worse (european or korean) disposable would make me feel like a traitor to the USA. my grandparents fought the japs and nazis and never let me forget it. I've had nothing but Big Block Chevelles and Impalas my whole life. that has'nt changed. i knew as a kid that racing motorcycles or cars with motorcycle engines was the same as jerkin your gerkin. (fun, but not the real thing)

PS my little boy calls 'em onion cars cause when you revv 'em up......they say
UUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHONIONNNNNNNNNN :rofl

In about 7-10 years, any of these cars being discussed now will be recycled into Tupperware and my old Chevy's will still be hitting the streets in all their glory. (or about to be anway, I'm working on it!) ;)

It will be just like the early 80's garbage. See any of them around? All disposible trash. Just too bad it takes 7 years of more to get rid of them. :p

I wonder how many 81 Ford Escorts, Citations, Celebrities or K cars are really left anymore? I wonder how many of those people that bought them new regret the money they wasted or the older cars they traded in to get them? :p :evil

Long live old Chevy's!!! :cheers :beerbang

Just go to your local junkyard and see what is stacked up 3-4 high. Escorts,Cavaliers,Nissans,Mazdas,K-cars and so on.These things have no "soul".They transportation appliances with all the appeal of a new toaster. They are disposable. Try to find a late model RWD Caprice or pickup, there are far fewer of them in there. I wonder why?
