Last weekend I traveled to Medford, OR for the Gasser Wars and nostalgia race. I didn't have very good luck there. I dropped a valve on my second practice pass which side lined me the rest of the weekend.

But an older fellow and his wife came over to where I was pitted and asked when I was going to make a run. I explained to him what had happened and he nodded and said it had happened to him before too. He and his wife were really giving my car the once over. I introduced myself and he said he was Lee Brown (and his wife Barbara) and that he use to race a 61 Belair which had a 348 and 4 speed.. back in 1961. I wasn't familiar with his name or racing background but it turns out he raced in the early days against Hayden, Ronnie Sox and the rest.

Lee and his wife hung around for quite awhile talking about the old days. We talked about the tricks of the trade and cheats of the trade. He was the first to race a '57 factory fuelie and had to carry a letter from the factory stating that this car was a factory fuel injected car available to the public. He said he had to show that letter everywhere he raced.

He really enjoyed racing the '61. I asked why the '61 had a 348 and not a 409 and he said he got the car in early '61 and besides the 348 held up better at that time.

Lee Brown raced boats before switching to four wheels and ended his career in 1964 driving MOPARS. Barbara went to their car and got a recent copy of MOPAR Performance and there was an article about a fellow who restored this 1964 MOPAR back to its' racing glory days and sure enough it had Lee's name on the door.

Lee and Barbara told some great stories about their life drag racing to my wife and I. I wish I could have had a tape recorder to record the day. He told a great story of attending one of the Hot Rod Reunoins about 10 years ago. He said he went into the restroom stall and was sitting there and a voice from the other side of the divider asked "are you a racer?" and Lee said yes he was. "Who did you race against?" I told him " Don Nickleson, Ronnie Sox, (some others), and Hayden Proffitt." The voice from the other side of the divider paused and then said "I'm Hayden Proffitt!"

Lee and Barbara look great and are living in the Medford area.
Lee is 81.

What a great weekend. :)

Great story Paul.
Thanks for sharing. I like to hear about the guys that were there from their point of view. Long live "the good old days" even if I have to hear about them second hand.

But we didn't know then that they were going to be the good old days!!!!!!!!! Didn't know how much fun we were having. Didn't take the time to take pictures and record all the stuff we did. That's the problem, and now trying to remember it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Paul, Great story, did you do any serious damage when you droped the valve? If I remember right you've got #817, 340hp heads and have run in the very low 13's. I think Ray might only be a cool day at the track away from the 12s. I wonder if anybody has run 12s with the small port heads in a fullsize car. :deal :scratch

Jim...
small ports in the 12's ?
I'd imagine many times

Here's my 61 with an offy intake on 817 heads.

Fred's right about not knowing then those were the "good ole days". Lee's wife Barbara said it was a good weekend if the could win $25 and take the kids for hamburgers and milkshakes on the way home from the race.

Lee also told a story about how (I can't remember if he said raced at Phoenix and then to Pomona or the other way around) when they got to the next, I think Pomona, they made all the racers drain their fuel tanks and then fill them with the tracks gas. He said a lot of teams fell on their faces, particularly the Ramchargers.

No, Jim I didn't do a lot of damage. The valve only kissed the piston and bent it's stem but it did put a small crack in the valve guide area. We are going to clean up the valve guide area install new guides all around, Smith Brothers pushrods, mine were bending, new spring retainers and keepers. It should be ready by the end of next week. Oh, the main reason for failure was rocker studs. I hadn't installed screw-ins and the stock once were pulling. I got away fairly lucky this time.

I am using 817 heads and I am waiting for good air too. The car has run 13.0 three times this season at 105 - 106 mph.

Thanks for asking.

Paul, thanks for posting the "good ole days" story. Glad your damage was minor. Aubrey, I know there are several of us who are intending to build #817 head motors in the future. Would you mind sharing the head modifications, valve and spring combination that you used in your 61? Thanks,

Don't wanna "steal" this thread, Ronnie :) :bow

I'll make a quick post in the 348 / 409 Engine catagory

The car is going back together fine. Your right about the improvement to reliability. I'll be back in action on the weekend of the 25th for Woodburn's Oldies But Goodies and I hope to break into the 12's, not just break.

Where in central NY are you located? Back in the early 80's I was an Army Recruiter in Herkimer and Onieda. I traveled around quite a bit while stationed there. It is beautiful country except for the butt high snow.

Garbageman: I Live In Oneida, N.Y., And Was Born And Raised There. I Have Lived
In Oneida Almost All Of My Life, But I Want To Relocate To A Smaller Area, Nearby,
Within The Same County(Madison). I Did Live Out Of State A Couple Of Times, Very
Briefly(California-1980-One Month And Florida-1986-Eight Months). I Wish I Could Have Gotten A Chance To Meet You When You Were A Recruiter In Oneida Back In
The Early '80's. However, I Did Meet You And Enjoyed Talking With You At The KC
Convention!! I'm Very Happy Your "09 Will Be Racing, Soon!! Regards:"ww".
