Easier way to do the alt is to use an INTERNALLY REGULATED 94 ampere alternator from a Citation with A/C, mid to late 1980's.
To single wire it from the OUTSIDE, bridge the large 12 volt lug on the rear of the alt to the number 2 side terminal, it is now a single wire alt. This way, if you ever need a new alt, it is easily obtained from any locak auto parts store, not some far away specialty house and from a Chinese alt source. And, the jumper wire only needs to be changed to the new alt for the system to be back in business.
To use a stock charge light, the number 4 wire from a remote regulator only need be connected to the numbr 1 side terminal opn the new alt, and the light works as stock.

Ignition Man that is great news. I never knew you could make a one wire alt out of a unregulated alt. Stay with us we need that kind of info. :clap Roy

been doing that for years, thats why GM products are so great, easy to work on or modify.

I too, learned that tip that was offered by from IgnitionMan years ago from a high school buddy who owns an gen-starter s hop. ( Even though there are not many generators used) But IgnitionMans information on exactly which alterrnator to use is great info. I , for one, will file that information to use in the future. That is the kind of knowledge you cant find in a book. Thanks to InitionMan!!!!

May be an issue here. The procedure outlined is for any 12SI design INTERNALLY regulated GM alternator, NOT for those earlier 10SI alternators that use a remote mounted, as on-fender mounted regulator, nor for the late model CS series "mini" diameter alts.
All one wire alts today that don't use an outside jumper wire as outlined, use a regulator designed for industrial and/or farm equipment, not for pass car.
The industrial/farm regs do the outside wire connect INSIDE the alternator and those regulators are usually impossible to find when on the road someplace in Resume Speed, Montana.
That reason alone is why the jumper wire and stock high ampere alts are desireable, parts are everywhere, including Speed Trap, New Jersey, etc. .

I am getting confused. Are not the 10SI and the 12SI both internally regulated? The SI meaning "system integrated"??

Let's simplify this.
Alternators with a remote retgulator cannot be made into single or three wire alternators.
Alternators that have internal regulators, which started in 1971 or so, can, with the jumper wire mentioned. The common output ampere levels are 65, 78 and 94 amperes.
Mini alternators as used on later systems, can be made single wire, but have rear end frame issues you really don't want to encounter.

Nice to see you back ignition man- what ever happened to that (someone) you were interested in so many moons ago?
also do you have any info on the new external replacement regulators for old GM alts that Pep boys sells?

Saw her 15 months ago, I went to her place. I am still a bad guy for some reason, she showed me a $4,000.00 wedding ring from her now permanently separated 5th husband and said "It was the biggerst mistake in her life", of which we all knew for the entire time. She missed the ring I had my Jeweler pal, who also races motorcycles, made for me, just at $11,000.00. She is still the most beautiful woman that has ever been n my life.
Oh, well, 26 years down, only have 974 more before I have to make a desision to keep waiting or not. What a bad life sentance.
The best regulator for the earlier GM remote reg alts is the Wells VR715. This reg is el;ectronic, NOT serbo type, works exactly like an internal reg does, and the stock Delco-Remy cover can be interchanged if so desired. A servo type reg has points to connect the stator and is always turning the stator oin and off, making things like lights appear to oscillate, brignt, dim, bright, etc. The electronic reg turns the alt on and holds it on, then drops excessive overcharge volts/amps to ground, keeping output level and constant.
