Restoring a 61 bubbletop 348/350 HP 4 gear. I have a question about the order of assembly. I am about ready to put on the 61 Impala side moldings. The question is: is the trunk splatter painted first then the moldings installed, or was the trunk splatter painted after the molding were on. This seems crazy, but the order implies if the exposed molding nuts within the trunk were painted with the trunk or nut. How about it, are your nuts covered in splatter paint or not?

Don't know about 61s but if it helps, I have an original 64 Chvelle convertible and the trim nuts inside the trunk are covered with splatter paint. Bungy

In response to "How about it, are your nuts covered in splatter paint or not?"
I just checked my 1962 SS made in Van Nuys (it's dead stock original) and yes, the nuts are splattered. Never thought I'd live to see the day when my nuts were splattered :)
Cheers!

HAH, HAH! LOL!
Tom, you made my day! I'm been in the doldrums for the last month and this really made me smile.
Although, it does sound a bit painful!
Thanks!

Neither of my 59's have splattered trunks. I do have a considerable amount of rust proofing on the insides of both 1/4's, but that is the only place.
Is that considered splatter, because i'm used to seeing the late 60's Chevys with the entire trunk done in multi-colored splatter. Mine are both just thick dust-covered black stuff. haha
Like the others before me, I don't know about a 61 for sure. Jim

Joker,
Chevrolet didn't start using splatter paint in the trunks until 61. Prior to 61, the trunks were painted body color.
As for the original question, my 61 SS had splatter paint on the trim nuts. It was all original when I got it, course the trunk was in such a mess that you could hardly tell.

You are right, Bob. I looked at the Eastwood mag and Classic Ind. and they both say spatter.

Now I can play too, 'cause my nuts are spattered, NOT splattered.
Splattering was out of the question...LOL
My car had spatter and sound deadening tar over the trim nuts. LA Production 61 Bubbletop. Original paint never accidented.
Cheers!

I am so glad no one got seriously injured over this "spatter" and/or "splattering" of their nuts, and that Wrench is now officially out of the doldrums. Must be real hot there in Dallas, but so long as your nuts are spattered correctly, I guess we can say things are "taking a turn for the good" :)
Best,

The CARS online catalog lists it as "splatter" paint.
