Is the Cowl tag ,or VIN plate, suppose to be the color of the car or just cleaned metal? I noticed on the convention DVD that the white Z-11 cowl tag was same color as car.:dunno

The body was dipped in primer prior to the Cowl Tag installation.
So it is normal to find primer under a Tag when its first removed.
The Cowl Tag was riveted to the body prior to its trip through the paint shop.
Therefore, the Cowl Tag is painted body or firewall color.

Thanks for the info. Some guy who thinks he's got all the answers told me it is not suppose to be painted.

Pauls63409,

I'm not sure you got the information that you were searching for: the cowl tag and the vin tag are 2 different tags. The cowl tag (as it implies, is mounted on the cowl) on every 61, 62 & 63 Chevrolet that I've seen has been painted body color (except for the late 63's which had the cowls painted low gloss black) while the vin tag which is located in the left front door jam is not painted.
I hope this answers your question

Just to add a bit to what Tommy said...even with the semi-gloss firewalls on 63s (except a few Atlanta cars that still had body color firewalls, and lets not forget Canadian Chevrolets that had body color firewalls into the late 60s if not beyond) the cowl tag was painted body color. I believe, just from inspecting my car and talking with Verne Frantz, that the firewalls were painted first, then the masking hood was put over the front of the car and then the color was applied. The cowl tag would have been shot in color since it isn't on the firewall in 63. This seems to be true as the very top of my cowl (just below the rear hood seal) had some body color over spray. My car is black so it was a little hard to tell until I started sanding with 400 and I uncovered some firewall markings that were partially hidden by the body color over spray.

Ross is correct, I forgot that the '63 cowl tag was located on top of the cowl so it would have been body color even if the firewall was black.:doh
