View Full Version : 1962 true 409 fender badge info...?
Perhaps there is already a thread on this topic that someone can direct me to or a PDF document of some sort.
Could someone give me the dimensions or position of a true 409 front fender badge (such as the distance of the "409" below the flags)? These extra holes were certainly punched from the factory at some exact distance from the top flag holes.
Thanks for your help.

Gearhead409 provided me with those distances, but I do not have them with me at the moment. The pins are not the same on the LH and RH side of the "409" emblems, so the "distances down" from the parallel crossed flags are not the same (if that makes sense to you). Be careful, as the left and right pin placements are the reverse of one another (again, assuming that makes sense).
I will try to look them up, but I bet he (Gearhead) posts before that :)
One tip I do have is to measure 2-3 times, fit the emblem up and have some one step back and look for you. Reason is you can't be off by too much when you drill the holes. If the emblem looks slanted and you try to wallow out the holes to make them level, you will be able to notice the enlarged holes. Trust me on this one! Look at the emblem and you'll see there's little room for error. Once you inspect them, and fit them up, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Best,

From Gearhead himself (this guy has more 62s than the rest of us combined :)):
"on the left fender the front hole is 1.300 center to center from the flag holes and the rear hole is 1.420. on the right fender front hole is 1.420 and rear hole is 1.300"
Here's the discussion thread that came from: http://www.348-409.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5014&highlight=409+emblems
Hope that helps!

When I drilled the holes for the 409 emblems on my old 63 SS, I covered the area I was drilling into with masking take. That way I could make marks and it also helped get the bit started. I think it may have even helped to keep the paint from flaking arround the holes. Best of luck!!!

Tom k and others,
Thanks for your help and the link to the past thread! The dimensions are very helpful, but I was wondering if anyone could also send me a close up picture of correct 409 badge/flags on a fender.
It's a long story, but I have pictures from a guy selling a sport coupe project who has a car with all the 409 specific attributes and claims they are all factory/original. However, the close up picture he sent me of the front fender badge looks incorrect. To me, the "409" numbers look too close to "V" that cradles the flags.
If someone sent me a picture, perhaps it would be easy to see a difference in the distance between the flags/#s on his car vs. a real badge layout. Unfortunately, the car is not anywhere close to me and there are a lot of fishy details. This may help clear up one of these unknowns for me.
Thanks,
Jim

Models916,
I know you made the "490"emblem in jest, but I drive a GMC truck with a 293 CID (aka 4.8 L) engine and a roots blower. With the amount of boost I'm running the virtual displacement comes out to almost exactly 490 Cubes, and several days ago I was thinking how cool it might be to put the 409 emblem on the truck, with the numbers rearranged to 490 (OK, it's a GMC, but it's 99.9% Chevy :) ). With your kind permission, I would like to make some decals from that image and put them on my truck.
BTW, my interest in 409's comes from the fact that our family owned one when I was a kid in the 1960's. It was an oddball in that it was a 1961 Biscayne 4dr, which predates the 409 engine. However, the car was originally owned by the Billings, Montana police dept., which stuffed in a 409 engine they got from somewhere. I wish I could find out more about that car but unfortunately the trail is cold. But enough rambling (this is a site for Chevy's, not Ramblers :brow ).
