I have taken my steering column completely apart to replace a couple of items and to repaint.
At the steering knuckle where the boot is attached and the bolt goes through to attach it to the other end of the steering rod, the knuckle is full of some kind of icky goey grease. Is this just standard chassis grease that's rotted over the years or does this take a special type of grease. If so, what kind??

Thanks

If your asking about the UPPER STEERING COUPLING. "YES" you use standard chassis grease inside the metal coupling and the rubber boot. Per the 61 shop manual.

Yep, that the stuff I used (standard grease).

I replaced the original "283 grease" with new "409 grease" when I took my steering shaft apart :) :) :). Got some left over, might use Ebay to sell it :).

I also recommend replacing the rubber components, often sold in a kit form.

Cheers!

yes you are spending too much time on ebay. i thought of putting some used motor oil in an old time glass motor oil bottle, marking it USED 409 OIL and selling it at the next swap meet i go to. who knows, it might bring big bucks!
