I am finally putting my 4spd into my 62SS. Factory specs. However, as I tried to put the tranny in the block it will not go all the way in. It is an aluminum rebuilt borg warner T10. I was told it was for a 409 but specifically ask if it would fit into a 283 and I was told yes. Eventually I will put a 409 so I figured I would go with the original aluminum T10. I am not a mechanic but try to do things on my own. My question is: Is the shaft on the tranny to long? Do they come in different sizes? It is about a 1/2 inch from going all the way in.
Please Help!

Maybe a dumb question but did you use an alignment tool...how about the pilot bushing in the end of the crank...is that new ? Sounds like you are not getting in to that bushing...

To my knowledge, all input shafts are the same length. Never heard anything about a longer shaft being available. Don't see how there could be a longer input.
You say you are 1/2" from going clear in. There was a change in the bearing housing on the front of the trannys. Measure the diameter of the front bearing housing, and the hole in the bell housing to see if they are the same.
What kind of pressure plate are you using? And throwout bearing. When the tranny stops going in, can you move the clutch fork? Not positive about this, but maybe a B & B pressure plate and a long throwout bearing could hold you out.
Did you replace the pilot bearing? I'm sure you would have used an input shaft or tool to line the clutch plate up before tightening the pressure plate down. Could it be off enough to not line up with the pilot bearing?
These are all I can think of at the moment. Will think on this, and I'm sure there will be more jump in with ideas.
Good Luck.

I went to car parts and ordered a clutch kit from "SACHS" of course I threw the box away. But everything is new. Yes I put the align tool. The flywheel is brand new too. How do I check if I am using the right throw out bearing? It came with the kit. HMMM well I am glad the tranny is not the problem. When I put it in it makes a sound of metal hitting a metal wall and its not going anywhere. I was going to tap it in but was told it should just slide in.

I have to think that Fred has the answer to the problem. There are a lot of 1963 bellhousings floating around and most people arent aware of the smaller opening. I think those bellhousings were #421 but my memory is bad, so maybe someone can post it for sure. It would explain why you are coming up a 1/2 in. short. Be patient, problems like this pop up from time to time, you will figure it out. Good luck

Whatever you do...don't hammer it !!! You may not be holding the trans level when you are going in...have you tried "wiggling it around" to see if you can slide it home ?

What Bob said... As tempting as it may be,,, Don't hammer on it. I can't add anything to what the other guys have said. It should should slide right in once you find the problem.

:) Remove the tranny and bell housing. Make sure the front bearing retainer on the tranny will fit the bell housing, while you have it on the ground. If you have a two piece bell housing ( pan on the bottom ) loosen up the pressure plate bolts just enough to keep the disc from falling out of alignment, but still able to move it with the tranny's input shaft. Install the bell housing without the bottom pan. After tightening the bell housing again try to put the tranny in. After the tranny engages the clutch disc, push up and wiggle it from under the front of the tranny, near the bell housing. They are very stubborn sometimes. After the tranny finally goes in, don't forget to torque the pressure plate bolts. Hope this helps:)

OK here's what you do...... Grab a buddy and a six pack. have your buddy hop in the driver seat while you crawl under the car. Grab hold of the tranny and start wriggleing and jiggling (the tranny not yourself) and try to shove it in, then tell your buddy to step on the clutch peddal, I'll bet 100bucks it will slide right in the last 1/2 inch. Then tighten the bolts and finnish up the rest. Then use the six pack to pay your buddy.
Oh and by the way, the reason it slid in when he steped on the clutch is cause the disk was not perfectly lined up with the pilot bushing and when he stepen on the clutchthe pressure plate let the disk free so the pilot stub would line up.
