Well it`s been a week since I`ve been able to use the computer:cuss
I`ve had a few glitches lately that I just couldn`t fix and keep getting the black screen of death so it was time to upgrade the motherboard and CPU.
The old one was just over a year or so old but I think it got a few to many ele spikes:eek:
Got a good deal on a Intel motherboard and chip set and now she runs like my 62 ~~~~:brow
get this BOB,,,,,, I upgraded to XP !!:deal
Ya know,,, I`m slow to change and like the old stuff. But I gotta tell ya what a difference it is to use this new system:cheers
SMOOOOTH !!!
"O" and Bob,,,, I now know why the site was not loading right. It was my system,,:bang
Although i didn`t have a problem with most of the other sites I think the combo of my old systems problems was a bad mix.
I also was have a problem with some of the upgrades and software I like being compatable with Win 98.
Even got one of them there fancy new 19" flat panel monitors.:brow
It can rotate 90* to view web pages,,, glad to be back,,dq

DQ, welcome back to the technology world. We take so much for granted, don't we? Like our machines should all work properly and with total harmony, in tune with our needs :).
At least these old "X" frame cars are not so technologically edgy, and they are easy to work on when compared to desktop technoligies. For whatever reason I seem to be able to build and fix PCs, but can't get the windows in my '62 sealed properly :(.. Seems it would be the other way around....
Anyway, glad to have you back in touch!
Best,
TomK

Ain't those the bomb! I just grabbed a Sony 23" for my system. Don't know why I waited so long. And at $300 I couldn't pass it up! This this is awesome!

I may have spoken too soon !! BUT I think the problem is my cable hookup.
Seems to work fine sometimes and slow as molasses other times.
Now that I`m reloading programs which sometimes need to be downloaded I can see problems with the download speed.
I`ll call the cable company and have them check it out.
Might have to go back to DSL.
Anyone know of a program that monitors connection speed? dq

DQ, mine is in the tool bar, lower right. I'm on a cable hook up, and it always reads 100.0 MBPS. Now, some downloads don't work that fast. Depends on their server. If their server is slow, or traffic on it is heavy, you will get some considerably slower downloads. Fault is not your computer or your server, but theirs.

Thanks jim,, got them all Over 60 emails waiting for me when I got up and running !
Weird thing is, like right now this site opens almost immediately with no hang ups but it can change almost instantly.
Sometimes I just give up and try and come back later.:dunno
Checked speed online several times today and the lowest was 1267.9 kbps and best was 4579.1 kbps and the average for cable should be 1500.
I`ve been trying to tweek my system to see if it has anything to do with any of the software I`ve installed.
Some (most) of the new software is so bundled up with crap you don`t need or want.
Like QuickTime, went you down load it you also get ITunes which I`ve read caused conflict with the other players you need now a days. I have at least three or four. Windows Media, QuickTime, Flash Player and MusicMatch.
I unloaded it and that MS Messenger crap.
Next I need to get more memory.
It`s too bad we have to have all this security software running to keep out all the stupid dweebs!!:evil
Anyway, I`m working on it,,,, dq

No blue screens for me either. The only time I saw a blue screen was on my parents computer when we didn't know that there were 185 virus's on it! :grumble: If you see the BSOD (blue screen of death), it means something isn't right and needs looking into. You need to write down the error code and find a site that can help figure it out.
As for this site, I know the server we are on is occasionally going off line lately, in fact, it just happened a few minutes ago for about 40 seconds. I am running at a measly 52.0 kbs and have no trouble with this or any other site. :dunno

DQ, I had the same problem for two weeks. When I ran a speed test, it would vary from 400 to 4500. I have Road Runner with Time Warner. I called them and they came out and changed all of my connections and it corrected the problem. The tech who came showed me a screen on his test unit which could see all of the errors and retransmits I was having. Maybe you should give them a shot at it.

Bob, I wasn`t getting the blue screen , It was BLACK with the little hourglass stuck in the middle.
No error codes.
Then I finaly got the bootup error that my chip set died.
I think I`m on the right track now as it`s loading all internet sites and site windows super fast.
I think I`ll leave it alone before I really screw something up !!:stooges

Did you install the service pack 2 with the XP Install it has alot of the updates and the firewall stuff? If you bought it new you probably did. Make sure the firewall and pop up blocker is on in windows it you should be fine.
Load that Norton and Avast like I explained and you shouldnt have any trouble at all. When I accidently go to those porn sites ;) It stops those trojan viruses that always try to load. Dont ever let one of these sites load a tool onto your computer. If something pops up dont click ok or close, click the X and close the box. Been running this setup for bout 2 years on this computer now and knock on wood no viruses.
Your welcome on the diskeeper, it is a great program, and way fast. with my memory and 80 gig hardrive it usually only takes a couple of minutes to defrag.

Yeh Hrly, I updated everything but I don`t use the XP firewall.
I use ZoneAlarm which I think is the best. It will aslo block outgoing stuff if you do get a trojan or virus where most other firewall won`t.
It also has in coming and out going email scan.
I also use AdAwre Plus that won`t let anything install in the computer wiythout OK-ing it.
I quit using anti-virus software a couple years ago and have not had a problem since using these other programs.:bang knock on wood
Thanks for the software, it`s great !!! ,,dq

So I finally got a cable tech that knows what he`s doing and didn`t mind going into the crawl space to check things out.
The first guy that came and installed the equipment had on Bermuda shorts and sandals!!!:rofl :doh
This guy checked everything and replaced wires, connectors , splitters, the modem and ran new wire ! Then pinged this site to see how the info was transfering.
All checks out now and Bobs site had GREAT ping numbers !!:clap
Lets hope this put an end to all my bitchin` and problems !!
I think I fried the last CPU trying to fix things!
I even upgraded to 1gig memory and added a DVD burner.:D
Dang, I could have spent this money on my 62:eek:
O-Well, I gotta stay connected to you guys,,,dq

Glad all is well now Jim. Computers can be frustrating. Many times I felt like throwing my old one through the window and going back to reality instead of playing around in cyberspace.
And I'm also glad to hear that we are pinging on all 8 cylinders. (and this is the only place I hope to be pinging) :p :D
