I saw your post that has no response thus far. I have a 62 convertible that I bought a couple of years ago. At the time the top would go down but not up, and a short time later would not do anything. A friend of mine was restoring the car for me. He didn't know if the motor was bad or needed oil. The motor would make a noise. He started to try to find out about the oil, and what he was told (do not know his source) was that sometime prior to 62-63, the motors used mineral oil and after that time, transmission fluid. He was told to try determine what was in the lines and if in doubt use the mineral oil for a 1962. We did and the top worked fine.

Jester,
The 1961 & 1962 & 1964 Chevrolet Shop Manual all show to use GM Hydraulic Brake Fluid Super #11 or the equivalent.

Thanks for the help guys. With all that I have read on the subject I'm inclined to believe that you could fill the pump with pan cake syrup and it would stilll work.
The first time I filled it with dextron trans fluid and it worked just fine. This time brake fluid. It works great. Thanks again,:rofl :rofl

I'd be leery of using brake fluid just due to the simple fact that it'll "eat" any paint that it comes in contact with, should you spring a leak. Definitely not something I'd want to have in the back of my mind.
