If I remember right the cam was referred to as a 3/4 cam

Roger, It would all depend on what your buddy is looking for. Performance? A direct replacement for the original? Stay with solid lifters or change to h yd.? There are h undreds of small-block grinds. Easy to pick one but the exact usage needs to be known.

I can't find the original lift and duration, but be certain they are too little and too much, respectively. There has been a ton of camshaft development since the Duntov days. Modern fast ramps allow more lift in a shorter duration boosting power throughout the whole powerband. A 283 needs all the torque it can get. Comp's Extreme Energy series should have something to suit him. Like RR says, the whole package needs to be known to give accurate advice. As a cheap fix and likely pretty close to ideal for a street 3-7/8 x 3 incher, the Summit version of the hydraulic Edelbrock Performer (204/214 .420/.442 112lc+5) can be had with lifters for under $80 with lifters. More modern solids are available too if he still wants to lean over the fenders once in awhile.

Roger,
I think the camshaft you are referring to was Part #3736097. The specs for that cam are as follows:
Int. Duration@.050 - 228, Net valve lift - .383
Exh. Duration@.050 - 230, Net valve lift - .382
Hope this helps.

Lunati makes this cam for a reasonable price. The number is 20109. I am going to use it in my 283 with my 2.02/1.60 iron Bowtie heads milled to 57cc yeilding 10.0:1 compression. I will install my cam retarded 4 degrees and lash it a bit tighter to extend rpm to 7000. Do not tighten beyond .010" cold. I expect to turn high 12's in the quarter with this setup in my 55Chevy based on my previous experiments with my 327 and 350 with the same heads and various camshafts.
If he wants a modern higher lift cam to perform somewhat better and require more machinework (nothing wrong with that) the comp cams 282s magnum cam is a nice step up with nearly .495 lift and a similar duration after lash.
Lunati 20109 dur: 228/230 @.050" lift 395/400 gross
lobe sep 110 intake centerline 106
Good Luck! Have Fun. Nice forum guys

P.S. I am building this motor this week. I will update you on actual performance once the engine is broken in.

The 097 cam is also available from Flatlander Racing as a cam and lifter kit, though I dont know the manufacturer. It is the first one listed.
