Several months ago I bought a 64 SS which has a '74 350 and TH350 installed by previous owner. The engine starts and runs very smoothly in park or netrual. When you pop it into any gear and put a load on (as to drive the car) the engine starts missing and spitting throught the carb. The engine has an HEI distr, the plugs are good and the wires not crossed. The hot lead (coil) from the ignition switch looks like it still goes to the ballast resistor on the firewall and then to the HEI. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Bob

A HEI dist. requires a full 12 volts. The first thing you should do when using HEI is to get rid of the resistor wire or resistor to allow 12 vts. from the igintion sw. That is not to say that is your only problem, but probably at least part of it.
I agree, make sure the HEI has full 12 volts before doing any other diagnostic procedures. If the coil has low output, you can have many drivability problems. Take the distributor cap off and check the wires coming out of the distributor pick-up assembly. These wires get pulled when the vac. advance moves and over time the wires break. Engine will run o.k. until you accelerate or put a load on the engine and the wires get pulled and loose the connection. Have seen it many times. Also make sure the E.G.R. valve is disconnected or eliminated. It is not required in your application. Hope this helps Brian

Thanks Ronnie :cheers It seems to run 90+% better just on the lift. Pulled it into gear, braked hard and it pulled strong with no popping. I have to wait for the weather to clear before I can take it for a drive. :)
MRHP Thank you too. I will also check out the inside wiring.
