hello
my old man has this small block chevy engine that im trying to find out what it is.

the casting # is 3970010 (3970010 302/350 69-79 145-370 car & Truck 2 & 4-Bolt Most common ) thats what chevymania.com gives me.

and the suffix code is K0614C2R (C2R 82 305 Camaro 145 LG-4 TH 350 4-Brl ) is what chevymania.com gives me for that.

we talk to the mechanic who sold him the engine and he says that its a 350, and that u only go by the casting # and that the suffix code means nothing.

so is this engine a 305 or a 350?

thanx a mill

kyle,
Chevy used the same casting block some years for different cubic inch engines. 68 and 69 are good examples. The suffix code determines the application, displacement, hp, and transmission configuration. If that code translates to a 305 then that is probably what it is although if you are going to rebuild you can build it to any borexstroke configuration for that casting.

Ok there is something wrong there.I use http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.html for maros only.Thats been right on for me.Now on that site they have suffix codes also and groupe codes. 010 also come back as a 327(not 305)(that would be great). In the maro fashon (of wich you have stated the suffix comes back as a 327 or 350).I do maros gen 1 and 2s only super rare models. There is a major mess up in stamps from the maros in those years.Thats why the prices go so high for them.Browning hwy plant was doing some of the builds and shipping the built blocks out to other places. My guess is you have a 350 2 bolt main or a 327 not a 305.If you can give me the head numbers. Also if you can and the motor is under paint right below the numbers take a pen knife and lightly scratch the paint away.If you see a serial number below the casting mark or on the front deck you have a super good find (for my group only).Camaros are really screwed up in those years for stamps. If its a 327 with serial numbers stamped on the deck give me those numbers and ill tell you what you have and what car it came from and also a buyer if the car still exists.I very highly doubt it.Sorry for stomping in your reply as you are 100% correct C.Thomas.In a few very rare cases though there is a 327 that went into the maro we look for that is a 010 block. your 010 block is a very common block. He is correct with the numbers but there is an odball case.We like to reunite the org blocks with the org cars thats the only reason I ask.If no numbers most likly you have a 350 2 bolt from what I see.

so how do u know what site to go from, one site say one thing and the onthe says another.
sounds vary confusing to me, like with my 350, the casting # matchs the suffix code #. so i dont know.
i dont real wanna get them numders off the head becouse the engine has just been rebuilt and painted so.
an other ideas?

Personally I only go by the casting number. The stamping means nothing. They may have used the same casting number for different sized engines, but they have the same bore. The 305 and 350 have different bore sizes therfore different casting numbers. You have a 350.
Here's a good site for casting number info:
