Hey guy thanks for the info, but where can you get the OE filters? how much are they? Also is there a part # on the canisters, if so where? What color are the canisters black or orange? for a 64 409. THANKS RJ

RJ, Original part no. is PF141 AC brand. You can find WIX replacement practically anywhere. Some trucks used longer cannisters requiring PF131 . Iv e always painted black, but Im not sure that is correct.

I believe that Ronnie is correct in that the cannisters were painted black. I've seen some reprints of old GM photos of various Chevrolet V-8 engines (348s and 409s included) and the cannisters were black. I think that the cannisters would have been sprayed with gloss lacquer. It wouldn't have been as glossy as body paint but I do believe that that part was gloss. You often see sags in the original finish of these parts becasue the paint was very thin.
The air cleaners of that time were also gloss. Again sprayed with the lacquer, which was very thin and sometimes looked semi-gloss due to the fact that is deteriorated quickly and wasn't applied as carefully. I had a near mint 59 pontiac air cleaner that was gloss and currently have a very nice 61 Chevrolet air cleaner lid with a pristine inside that is also gloss. I get a little carried away with this sort of thing!! I've got 5 different variations of black under the hood of my 63!!:D

When my 62 SS 409 was delivered to me in April of 1962, the cannister for the oil filter was painted a semi-gloss black.

If you have access to a truck supply house who has Baldwin filters these are a very high quality filter. The Balwin number is P18. I have to buy a case at a time but that is OK with me. They are like the old AC Purolators with metal inner core and metal end caps, not all cardboard like some are. Wix is another good filter.:) Roy

I was only able to find the PF-141's at the Chevy dealer but they keep raising the prices every time I go. :cuss

I found them in a Chevelle parts catalog I have from NPD. They have them for $4.95 each so I bought 4 recently. (have 6 in stock now!!!) :D

Here are some other brands that interchange w/part numbers:

AC PF-141
NAPA FIL1143
Wix 51143
Hastings LF-211
Fram CH200PL
Purolator L30141
Baldwin P-18

and thanks to Roy, I added his on the end of my list. :brow (if anyone has any not listed please let us know)

I've been planning a page with air, gas and oil filter numbers for 58-65 Chevy's to be added to this site but it's still in the makings yet.
