I know this may be a little like trying to describe the color red but how quiet is a "quiet gear drive"? Or for that matter, how noisy is a "noisy gear drive"? :D

I'm considering one for my truck. I just bought another 350 for my truck that has 68,000 original miles from a '75 Impala. (little old lady car) Thinking I may put in a mild cam and freshen it up with a new gasket set and run it. (gear drive maybe)

Note-All I'm going for is the sound effect! Truck is my daily driver 69 C10 stepside and I'm not interested in making it fast, just want it to sound like it is! :p :rofl

I only know of the Pete Jackson brand. The Quiet is almost silent except for some chatter at idle with big cams. The noisey (machined for more noise) is very loud, you could hear the car comming 2 blocks away. I always used a Pete Jackson racing gear drive (reg. noisey) that had a whine you could hear about 10 car lengths away. I don't believe it was marketed as noisey or quiet. If you want to hear a radio in the car, get quiet or a chain. There is no way I could hear a radio in my 62 (if it had one) with the regular noisey drive. But then again, I like the sound of the gear drive.

Thanks everyone. I still can't decide.... :coffee:

Since it's my daily driver, I'm not sure if I want something very LOUD! (might drive me crazy!)

On the other hand, the quiet one sounds like it might be TOO quiet. I want something in between. :p :rofl

Thanks for the heads up on the ebay auctions Jim. That's where I'll go if I decide to get one. :brow

The one thing that scares me away is alot of the times when someone is selling a noisy gear drive, they say, "took it out because it was too loud for me". :D One on there has 50 miles on it due to this. Another has 600. On the other hand, my stereo system is pretty healthy! :p

I wish I knew someone that had one around me that I could listen to. Maybe I can find someone at Carlisle this year and give them $2 bucks to fire up their engine. :p :D

I had a noisy Pete Jackson in my Willys and it was louder than the blower. I like lots of mechanical sounds, but this made me crazy. And it draws aggravated attention from a lot of people. Try it, but be willing to eBay it without regret if it doesn't work out.

Well Michael, I think you just made my mind up for me. I guess I was thinking along those lines all this time but wanted someone to talk me into it. :D

Since it's my daily driver, I think it would be too much to put up with. I don't mind a little attention but....

I have a great idea for anyone that wants to come out with a new product to manufacture/sell.... Make some medium sounding gear drives! :D I'll be first in line. :stooges

Think I'll just toss in a new chain/gear set in it and call it a day. :p

The few gear drives I hear on the streets you can hear them coming blocks away!!
Love the sound but never rode inside a car with one.
Sounds like good advice from Michael.
