I just checked the "casting numbers" section on the Home Page for info on the "correct" manifolds for the 1962. I thought it was the centre dump or first design, but this shows up as 1961 for the "584/585" numbers. However, the 2nd design could be used right? "923's" to "926's" as dealer add ons. These being the rear dump cast header style.

What manifold would an early to mid 1962 production 409/409 have installed?

Thanks in advance.

Ron,
I believe that all the 380 and 409hp 409s in 62 had the center dump style manifolds. I am under the impression that the HI-PO manifolds were part of a service package that also came with a different cam. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Impalaguru said it correct. I had a set of the early service package manifolds but I sold them. They were on my 62 when I bought it.

My 1962 SS 409 was delivered to me with this complete service package on it. In all the years I raced this car, I only ran across one other one that was delivered with the package. A lot of guys were installing the new design cam. Around this area it was known as a mark V1 cam.

The complete package had the header style manifolds, the new cam, single point vac. advance dist., updated jets & metering rods, and much more. There is an excellant article on this package in the April 1962 issue of Hot Rod Magazine. It's titled "Chevy Updates Their 409" Page86. A lot of the parts they list appear to be casting no.s instead of part no.s

Also there is a road test of this new set up in the July 1962 issue of Motor Trend Magazine. It's title is "Chevrolet A Hot One" page33. The article is pretty good, but the road test sucked. I'm sure glad mine ran stronger than that one!

Mine ran 13.5- 13.7 @ 102-105 right out of the box. The first few times it was raced We just pulled the air cleaner off, Threw on a pair of Atlas Bucron tires, and installed exhaust dumps. [naturally installed scatter shield too]

I have no way to scan these magazine articles and post them on the forum, But if anyone wants to do it, just email me your mailing address, and I will make photo copies and mail them to you.

The Hot Rod article really answers a lot of questions. Both articles have good photos. Actually the only thing I didn't like about the Motor Trend article was the funky road test.

The correct exhaust manifolds are 3814683 and 682. Same manifolds used on 63 and 64 low horse. Chevrolet sold a set of 62 manifolds over the counter those were 3822923 and 924 and are very hard to find. Late 62, 63 and 64 Hi horse are 3822925 and 926. The 583 and 584 are 61 only. Date codes are the only thing to watch if your going that way. Don
