You may have a lifter with not enough preload on it to put the plunger in the center of its travel. This is assuming you have hydraulic lifters. If you are running scorpion aluminum roller rockers or possibly other brands I have heard roller rocker arm noise on initial fire up and go away after a minute or so. My scorpions do this and I have heard of this noise from others as well. Hope this helps:D

MRHP, Do you have hyd or solid lifters? I don`t think I have ever had noise start-ups with my Scorpions,,, ( solid rollers) dq :dunno

You should not have noise on just one rocker/lifter. If you have noise it should be all or nothing. Having noise from just one source would kinda freak me out! Has it been doing it every startup? Maybe a piece of debris is caught in the lifter. Did the rod I sent work out for you ?

thanks fat, the rod worked out great....it didnt happen on initial start up, and only happened one time after...it was there for like 5 seconds and went away, dont quote me on it being just one rocker, i dont know exacty how many it was.

I have a solid flat tappet lifter. The noise is more of a shuck shuck rather than a clack noise. I believe when the oil runs off of the rocker it makes more noise. When oil is pumped up to the rocker arms it cushions the movement and the noise goes away.

Could this be due to one of the following,,,

type and grade of oil,,,
type and volume/pressure of oil pump,,,
clearence at distributor collar,,,,

Just some thoughts,,

I`ll have to listen closely next time i fire mine up. It has been sitting all winter,,dq

on a new rebuild the pushrod and lifter may not be seating 100%. when you shut the engine off the lifters will leak down and may suck air into them at the pushrod. this can be a bigger problem when reusing old pushrods. if you have your valves adjusted right i wouldn't worry about it, get some miles on it and it will more than likely go away.

With hyd lifters you would be correct. I believe some others have said this about solids and that where I have the questions.,,dq
