Today in 90 deg Humid air the 409 ran 190 degs Highway and 200 city.I don't know how it would run bumper to bumper traffic :dunno
My Question is,I have an electric fan inside my radiator as a puller,It dosen't seem to do anything.(1) do I remove this fan for more cooling surface?(2) Leave fan as is?(3) Install fan out side as a pusher?
I don't have much time to test the different setups because I'm leaving for Clay City Thursday night on a 1,000 mile Drive.Your Opinions Please :D

Jim, Didn't you build that shroud for a regular belt driven fan? The way you have the electric fan set up you are only cooling the spot where that fan is setting. You need to build a shroud so that the electric fan pulls air through all of the radiator. Your best bet is to put the belt driven fan that you built the shroud for back on.

I would bolt a flex fan on for the trip and worry about the electric latter.

Don,It is a belt driven fan,I took the fan off for a better photo.I'm thinking about removing the electric fan for more cooling surface for the manual fan, also I have a stock 7 inch water pump pully now and I'm going to switch to a 6 inch pully.
Here's a photo of belt driven fan.

Take the electric fan off and toss it in the trunk. I suspect it's not helping any and may very well be doing more harm than good.

Thanks Guys,I removed the fan and I have it wired up to be a pusher if I need it.I'll bring it just in case I need it.Don and Models I'll see you guys in Clay City and have a safe trip,Mike how about you coming to Clay City.

Jim: I couldn’t agree more.. Electric fans work best when they are fitted to use the entire radiator. For maximum cooling efficiency, it usually takes two fans and a double shroud that encompass the whole radiator core area . At best, a single fan mounted in the center of the radiator only works at 50% efficiency. A stock fixed fan with a factory shroud is better.
Have a safe trip!

Jim,,,i sure wish i could, i think dond409 is right, i was told and read elect fans are better pullers over pushers. two fans are better more coverage,
now i was talking to a a/c guy he said you will mess up air flow with the two fans one slow(belt drive) and one fast (elect drive) air turbulence between the fans:dunno just a thought,i asked back when i put my fans in. i have two fans no shroud.
have a great time drive safe mike

There are 2 things I see from the photo's you posted. The electric fan is not
large enough in diameter. It should be about the size of your shroud opening.
Puller fans are always better performers that pusher fans. The flex radiator
hoses are not helping your either, the OE type will help your flow more water.
Most dual electric fan set-ups are for A/C cars so that one can come on when
the compressor kick's in to help cool the condenser.

My Question is,I have an electric fan inside my radiator as a puller,It dosen't seem to do anything.(:D
I have my elec fan installed between the grill and rad as a auxiliary pusher fan.
It is not ment to replace the fanbelt powered fan but as an helper.
I agree that the elec fans need to pull and have a schroud to work best.
But,, I use mine as installed for extra cooling in trafic and in the staging lanes when the engine is off.
This works fairly good in traffic and very good in the staging lanes.
I also don`t think the way you have it setup is much help at all as Bam has explained.
Try installing it on the outside like mine to help as an auxiliary fan like in a stock A/C car would have.
They do work when stuck in traffic that way.
The only better option is to have the dual puller fan setup with the schroud or in your case maybe set that elec fan or one that fits in the round opening in that COOL alum schroud you built !!

BTW,,, IMO the stock rad hoses have a cleaner look then the painted steel flex hoses.
I feel that they also distract your eye when you look into an engine compartment.
Instead of seeing all the good stuff your eye is drawn to the guady hoses. (sorry)
With all that cool stuff you have and have done under your hood keep it clean looking. Once again,,, JMO and it is your car

I have one fan, electric puller, has it's own shroud. Mr. Gasket 16" 2000 cfm. Works good. You really need to use one or the other. An electric fan, set up correctly, takes a back seat to none. Frees up HP, cools in traffic and saves your water pump. I will run no other. Crank driven fan in traffic at idle will not pull enough air in front of an HP engine. Electric fan will. Geary is right, flex hose is a no no! flows much less water, too much friction loss. My electric fan setup is not perfect. It will still overheat in traffic on a 95+ day after 1/2 hr. But it is waaaaaay better than the clutch fan setup I had previous.

Sure you don't have a 195 thermostat in there?

Today I ran the 57 in 96 deg heat on the highway I ran 170 deg,in the city it did not run over 200 deg and I ran at a idle for 15 min and it ran to 205 deg then I turned on the new 16 inch pusher fan and it whent to 200 deg again. From the first test I did,I switched to a 6 inch water pump pulley, switched to molded radiaitor hoses and removed the puller fan and installed a 16 inch pusher fan.
After working on this 409 for 25 years to Cruise in 90 deg heat in bumper to bumper,I'm happy as S--T :D :) ;) :cheers :beerbang
