I just got my 409 long block back from the machine shop and am starting to put it together. 1st question. My machinist said when I start the engine to adjust the valves first with engine running before breaking in the cam. The valves were adjusted by him before I picked it up so I know they are pretty close to where their supposed to be. I have always broken in the cam first and adjusted the valves after a 1000 miles or so on my small blocks. What is the general consensus on this?
2nd question. I notice the three motor mount holes are much larger than the bolts which leaves allot of side play in the mount. Should I leave them loose a little until I get the engine in the car and bolted in and then tighten them up for better alignment? Heres a pic on the 409. I just slapped it together for the pics. It's a 656 block with ross 10.5 forged pistons, (netting 9.5 to 1 compression, with reliefs), 333 heads ported and polished with 209/ 172 valves. I had the head intake runners grinded out for my 463 intake for better alignment. The cam is a 3/4 race cam. I don't have the numbers on the cam at hand. I'll be posting more pictures in the next couple of days. Thanks, Mac

First off,, nice looking engine !!

Second,, ya need to learn to resize pictures !!!:rofl

Me??? I would double check the valve adjustment before firing it the first time to make sure everthing is right.

Then re-adjust them after it cools down.

Some Think you should adjust them hot but I don`t think it matters as long as you know what you are doing.
I have done mine cold then checked them hot and they were right on,,,dq

When we broke in the stroker engine, we set the valves cold, started her up for the 20 minute break in, then checked the valves afterwards. Seems to have worked. Hope it works for you.

Good luck!
