View Full Version : Got the engine in the car. Have more ???
We got her in just fine this weekend. Plan of firing her up tomorrow.
1st ?, What do I do to get the fuel line and glass filter filled with fuel before I start cranking??? I know it will take a good 15-20 unnecessary seconds of cranking to get the fuel up to the carb.
2nd?, It's been real hot here in so cal and I read somewhere about sticking a garden hose in the rad, opening up the drain cock and running fresh water in to keep the temps down while breaking in the cam. What are your thoughts on this. Thanks Mac

You can get fuel to the line and bowl by pressurizing the fuel tank with a few lbs of air pressure. Place your air blow gun nozzle in the filler neck and use a shop rag as a gasket. Only one or two psi should get the job done. Just tap the blow gun trigger untill the tank is pressurized. This should fill the carb too!

I would just run the hose over the fins of the radiator if it gets over 190. Too cool is not good to break in the engine and cam. I pressurized my tank to get fuel to the carbs. Only a couple of PSI is needed.
Thanks guys. I was thinking of siphoning fuel up to the carb, buy your way seems allot easier. :clap I'll let you all know how it goes. :beerbang

Yeh, that one deserves to go into the Tips/tricks page. Since Fatride mentioned it first, he gets his name with it. :D
Wish I knew of this one when I did mine. I just cranked mine but fuel came right up no problem.

You can also place a good elect house fan in front of the radiator to blow air into it.
This will help keep it cool without spraying water all over your nice new engine !! ,,dq
Well after a nervous morning I pulled myself together and got ready to fire her up. I tried fatrides tip with the air in the gas tank but it didn't work. :dunno I ended up disconnecting the carb inlet and siphoning up fuel. After I got a mouthful, I felt it was up far enough. :brow With timing light and vacuum gage hooked up, I cranked her over. She fired up after 8 seconds or so and ran like crap. Turns out the timing was severely retarded, brought her up to 10 degrees tdc and she ran great. Then it was up to 2000 rpm, varying between 1500 and 2500 rpms for 20 minutes. I stuck the garden hose in the rad and opened the petcock and I was able to regulate the temps. By increasing and decreasing the water pressure and opening and closing the drain valve, she never got over 180. Besides burning some of the paint off the block at the center exhaust area, all went well. Changed the oil and filter with valvoline racing oil and took her for a test drive with my wife. She drove well for the 30 minute drive, varying my speed back and forth to seat the pistons. The temp never got above 160 degrees:) :) I do have a 160 thermostat and outside temps were around 80 degrees. Hopefully my 7 blade flex fan is doing it's job. Could be running cooler because the hood is off I dunno. I only run 15% antifreeze. I couldn't resist opening her up a couple of times. Holy s**t. I almost broke the seat frame. Going from a 250 hp 327 to this torque monster is surreal. Has a nice rumble to it. Now I just have to get my mufflers welded in and put the hood back on and onto the car shows.:clap Thanks for all your help. Mac
