The 62' was really ready for a new clutch. Had the car for ±1½ years and had limited driving time due to a number of kinks..most of which have worked out OK.

Last we I found out that the transmission is a Borg-Warner..it is aluminum. The mechanic was not sure... but thought the unit may be from the mid 1970's. I was hoping to get all the numbers off this unit before it was re-installed, but I didn't want to hold up the shop just for this. This is a close-ratio transmission.

After the new clutch was installed I was told that the throw-out bearing sits really sloppy on the main shaft. Although, the overall feel to shifting through the gears is a "bit' tighter, but there is still a consistant grind shifting into second. I was told that the tranny needs to be rebuilt.... I knew that was coming.

Anyways...here's the rub...I was told that the clutch would need readjustment after a short while, after its initial installation. Noticed that clutch travel was different from before. Now it engaged at the floor, as opposed to the upper end of clutch pedal travel. Had the car out a few times since clutch installation.

Tonight...for the first time..I could not downshift into first without alot of noise and backed off right away. Next stop..four-way. Transmission would not engage. Strange...??? Sat there at the 4-way stop and tried 1st, and 2nd..I could get it in gear but the car would not move..like I had the brakes on! Guess I got lucky and started to finally roll in 2nd until I got home..not too far away.

Q1. Should I rebuild..the potential 70's tranny...or hunt for a more date matching BW tranny while I'm spending money anyways.

P.S. Formerly..had much vibration going over 40 mph turned out to be that someone had re- welded the driveshaft yolk many degrees off normal. Very smooth now after re-weld and balance. Some say this car may have had a racing application in view of 4:56 gears, close ratio gearbox,(broke) and snapped driveshaft yoke..etc. (What ever)

Who knows whats next...especially after over 40 years of unknown history of this car?

Chevy stopped using the BW alum case 4speed in mid 63. Then changed over to the muncie rock crusher. The throw out bearing fits inside the clutch fork retainer clip. I had my retainer clip break on one side and this caused the TO bearing to slide at an angle on the bearing retainer. Replaced the clip from the Car Shop, and its OK now. The clutch adjustment on your 62 is done by lengthening the clutch pedal to zbar rod. The adjustment clevis is located on the zbar swivel. This adjustment should engage the clutch higher up on the pedal. Very easy fix. Sounds like a rebuild is in order:cry , or at the minimum new syncros. Cal John, (4speed john), located in Anaheim Cal. He rebuilt my T-10 last year. 714 974-5539 If nothing else, he can answer your questions. Mac

My guess is that you may have one of the newer, Super T-10s. They look a lot like the older Borg Warner T-10s but the Super T-10s came out in about 73:scratch and replaced the Muncies. Strength wise, I think it's almost as strong as an M-22 Rockcrusher and certainly stronger than the old T-10s and regular Muncies. They have the big output shaft, 32 spline I think.:scratch Same as the TH400 and the Rockcrusher. A local transmission shop got me a rebuild kit and I did the job myself with the help of the shop manual and a magazine article. It's one of those jobs that would go fairly easily if you did it every day but it's slow going when you've got to keep looking at the manual. The only special tools you need are good snap ring pliers.
