TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — General Motors Corp. (GM) will bring back its Chevrolet Camaro muscle car in 2008, the automaker's chairman and chief executive said Thursday.

The car will be similar to a concept vehicle unveiled in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Initial production will begin at the end of 2008, and retail sales will start in the first quarter of 2009.

The announcement was made by GM CEO Rick Wagoner as he spoke at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City.

Chevrolet stopped producing the fast and sleek car in the 2002 model year after a run that began in 1967.

Fred & dq409,
GM has been show casting that Camaro for the last 3 weekends on Woodward Ave. Before the dream cruise next weekend. They have put one thats silver on a flat bed with a white w/ red stripes 69 Camaro for comparison. They just go up and down. for about 3 or 4 hours each night. They will not stop the truck for anyone to get a close look see. But GM looks like they plan too advertise long and hard for the next 2 years. But if thats all they have, their in deep trouble.

I agree they are much too late coming to the game. But they have other problems with the cars they are screwing together lately. A few weeks ago I was on vacation in Colorado and Hertz gave me a new Hyundai Sonata. I figured well it's just for a week and it doesn't really matter. Was I wrong! That Hyundai was a primo ride, because it was extremely well made. Quiet, plenty of power, did everything right. No engine roaring up in the mountains,no jerking transmissions downshifting and upshifting,no road noise coming up the steering column like every fwd GM car I ever drove! And this Hyundai was assembled here in Alabama.Hey Lutz.....It can be done! Guess what I'm gonna get at the next new car time?

BJ & ED, Yep ,,,, if you can`t get a decent good looking GM then the other option is the automotive manufactures that WILL produce a car that is cool to own and drive !!

MoPar and F**d have cars that are designed with what us car guys want and will buy.
MoPar I believe is standing at the front of the line with the models they have and are coming out with.
F**d only has the Mustang (in our price range) but man is it a nice car !!! You owe it too yourself to look under the hood of the Mustang !!!

I just drove a friends Hyundai last night. bottom of their line, $10,000 car.
Great car !! 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, drove great, comfortable, very little road noise and lots of power!!

Maybe it would be good to have a foreign partner in GM. Some new blood and vision.
I would hate to see that and was in shock when it happened to Chrysler but look what it did for them!

I really can`t see any GM car I would be willing to buy.
I like the looks of the HHR but felt claustrophobic when sitting in it.
It also is under powered as in most GM products.

Don`t know what the answer is other then hiring a few of us on the forum to show GM what needs to be done to survive,,,,dq
