View Full Version : How to remove window trim safely
I have a 64 Olds 88,with the same roof as a Chevy, and I want to remove the window moldings around the windshield snd back glass.I bought the removal tool, but I'm not sure how to use it.The instructions say to hold it flat against the glass and run it under the trim, which I do,but when you hit something...then what do you do? Yank on it,wiggle it in some fashion,or some how finesse it out? I DO NOT want to screw something up by doing the brute force thing

When you feel the tool hit the clip, you roll the tool upwards as you keep pressure
on the clip by pulling the tool.
This pulls the clip away from the trim, and trim should pop up slightly. You may
have to gently pry up on the trim as you go.
Be carefull not to bend, or kink anything.
Hope this helps.

You need this correct tool. If you have one of those generic Triangular tipped tools it won't work. Easy enough to bend a piece of round steel and gring a point. Pic from Chevrolet book.
What kind of diameter do you think it is? 1/8 or 3/16?

.125 and a point should work. The point is what is going to get behind the tab a lift it. There will be a lot of sealer also. Will need to pry behind the trim with a putty knife as you move along.

just be carefull if going under the trim with any type of tool or doing any prying. You can crack the glass fairly easily if you hit the edge of it. Don't ask me how I know, all I'll say as tech school, corvette, expensive glass. The reveal moulding clip tool you slide between the glass and trim and catch the edge of the moulding clip with the curved point of the tool and rotate the tool to move the clip and release the moulding, may have to lift up some on the moulding. Can be tricky to get the clip to release sometimes. If there is any sort of sealer underneath there it makes things real difficult, worked on a 68 cougar once that was loaded with butyl tape by someone underneath the moulding.
