Hi Guys

I have finally purchased some heads and a motor on Ebay. The heads are in California and are no problem as I have a friend there who runs a street rod shop and has been able to organise pick-up for me. The motor is a different story as it is in Milwaukee and I have to arrange shipping to California. I have got a quote from FedEx (over $600) but I would like to get an idea if there is a less expensive alternative. Does anyone have any ideas here. I can get the motor and heads to Australia from California through another friend who brings in containers periodically. All I need is to get it to his shipping guy in Long Beach.

Thanks

Karl: FedEx Freight is expensive and only large shippers who get huge discounts use them. Have your seller drain all the fluids from the motor, strap it to a pallet and drop it off at a shipping company close to him. Good news is the cost of pallet freight for East to West is cheaper than the other way. I just had a 800 pound complete engine shipped independent freight from Maryland to Calif for $360 . If your drop off point has a dock or a fork lift you will save $100 over having to second haul it in a truck with a drop gate.

The risk is under PUC regulations, freight is only insured at $5 a pound.

Thanks alot guys - talk about quick responses. I am traking down quotes on Internet - have one so far for $275 from American Freight Companies. I will see how this goes.

Karl, I`m sorry to be the one to tell you this but it is against U.S. law to export any "W" block out of the States !!!

Might as well just ship it to my house!!:D ,,,dq

Does this mean I have to get a special export permit would that be permit No. 409W. Sorry to to take this one out of the US but we do need more W motors down under. There's too many SBC's and BBC's - it's getting a little boring.

I can't believe one got away. What was it and where in MD. If it was over on the western shore then walkerheaders wasn't watching or while he was playing with the robots you "snuck in" while he was gone

Hey Karl, you could just send it up here to Canada.............. it might be easier than getting a permit for down under.......... W's do very well up here in the colder climate.:rofl

Yeah, somebody was asleep at the switch. We snuck in under the radar and made off with a complete rebuilt 4422 block and 583 heads! The stuff was in an old garage in the country side about 5 miles from Fredrick. The guy who owned it was into Custom Harley's and the Sturgis scene. He thought at one time he wanted to build a 409 convert but lost interest.

We hauled it over to a shipper near B/W airport and dropped it off.. Caught the redeye back home..

I wish I had known you Maryland guys then, I would have loved to check out your rides..
