Here's a post by expert engine builder Joe Sherman that I coppied from another site. It sounds like he managed to make great power...
"Back in 1989 I built some 409 stroker engines for the nostalgla drags.The 4 inch stroker(454 crank) made 692 HP at 480 cubic inches. The 3.76 stroke(396 crank) made 675 HP. In big 3700 lb cars. we went 10.5 at 129 mph. We made our own billet 4 bolt main caps, and the basic block is very fragile.We had lots of fun for a few years.
