I am taking apart a 1958 348, and after removing the belt pulley, I don't see a bolt that retains the "balancer".

Is it just pressed on? I do see a woodruff key :scratch What am I missing?

Rolf: Yes, You'll need to use a Harmonic Balancer puller to remove it. Skip:)

Not sure if the 58 348 had a bolt there. Do you see any threads in there?
Might be pressed on. You can rent a HB puller from Autozone of just buy one new.

No bolt, just a conical hole.

I don't mind using a puller to remove it, but how do I re-install it, and how does it stay put :scratch

Thanks for any help...

The 348 damper is a press fit. There is a keyway that you will see when you remove the damper. To reinstall, back the crank at the rear of the engine with a dead blow or lead hammer with the crank slid forward away from the thrust surface pound the damper back on. I use a 3 pound hammer and a block of wood. In the 1958-60 shop manual it does not require that you move the crank forward. Let us know when you are going to install and I will quote from the shop manual.

Thanks a bunch, I will do it, and yes, I will get back with you when it's time to reassemble.

If the crank is going to be out, have it tapped for SBC bolt. Should not cost much. Could tap it yourself if you have a tap the right size.

I had the machine shop that turned my crank and machined the block to drill and tap my crank. Made it much easier to reinstall.
Can you remenber when you bought your first harmonic balancer puller?:dunno

Harbor Freight sell the puller fairly cheap. As for Autozone, if they have it, you can "rent" it and get a full refund when you return it

Excellent advice about tapping the crank. It's just doesn't feel right to be hammering on the crank.
