I just received the flyer for the Blue suede Cruise at Norwalk Ohio. I would very much like to meet the 409 gang here again for a camp out fun time. Anyone game? Fri-Sun, July 27th-29th. :dunno

When we got together two summers back in Norwalk, that was the best time I've had in a while. Would like to do it again, and it's within easy driving distance for me (about 600 miles). I hope to be able to make this one and a Clay City get together if that materializes. I hope others can make it as well!
Cheers,

Ray, I know it will be July before we know it. If I have a job, I just have to see if I can get some time off. If I don't have a job, I'll just have to back the timing off and run cheap gas! The first time we went was a blast. I'm still finding gravel in my shorts from that stupid clutch job. I'll bring the gin. We'll have to put on a good show, Frd will be watching! Rat

I might be able to make it but it's too soon to say for sure. :dunno I'm already commited to a few things around that time. If we put togther a 348/409 mini convention at Clay City I'd also like to be there as well. A bunch of the guys I race with are going to the Hot Rod Reunion in Columbus Oh. in mid June, so I'm going to try and make it there too.

You guys are getting me all worrisome with this talk of breaking down :). My plans are to drive the 409 car for 650 miles to Norwalk, maybe take a few trips down the track, drink some beer, tell lots of stories, get fired up about the next project, watch some car movies on a makeshift screen, and pass out in someone's trailer (thanks Jim!). Then I'll have breakfast on Fatride's home cooking, and do it all over again :). After it's all over, I'll fire up the '62 and head back to Missouri with a great big smile on my face and a whole bunch of stories to tell my friends. Now that's living!

When you said about "the looks", it reminded me about a trip I took out to the North east to pick up some cars. When I was going from Ohio to Boston we saw about 15 Corvetts parked at the entrance of the freeway. :clap :beerbang They were all new models and looked as if they were parked there for a Vette sale. Like 5 minutes later we saw packs of 5 to 15 Vettes passing us by. Guys, Jim K just brought up some disturbing news, the flyer says 75.00 per "FUN" run. That kind of takes the fun out of fun run doesn't it? I for one will not lay out 75.00 to make one run down anyones track. I may have to rethink this. Would you all mind if I looked for another track or another venue?

That sounds real expensive. I'm not really interested in racing my 348 because I don't want to be embarrassed:bow I quit racing years ago when I sold my GTX.
I live on a rural road with only 3 houses and the river at the end. Most of the land is cow pastures. Wonder if I could charge $75 per pass ???

Norwalk Raceway Park Is according to Mapquest 19.22 miles from our driveway. about 20 -25 minutes away. we are NOT campers but will certainly be at norwalk if thats we where we end up. My wife, Christine and myself would like to extend an invitation to ANYONE who would like to park a car and trailer at our place [4 acres] for the weekend and drive your car over to Norwalk. You can even pitch a tent and commute if thats suits you better than staying at the track. We have over 7 months to get this all figured out.

Hello all! Pop and I would love to try the Norwalk event. However, being the fru-fru that I am, I really hate camping! My idea of a great camping adventure is a Holiday Inn and having to share a towel with the old fart. What does the motel situation look llike? We do have several large canopies left over from the swap meet days which would protect a fair sized gathering place.....we'll install Ray as chief cook, Pop as the bottle-washer and we then can all sit back and enjoy the show:D Would really like some input on the motels.

We were just wondering what happened to meeting at Clay City? Norwalk was definitely a great time but it was just a car show not really a drag race. We sure would like to race the dragster with you guys but Norwalk won't let us race at "Blue Suede Cruise".

That may have changed this year at Norwalk, the ad says that the car must be era correct to 1972 and Garlis raced the first rear engined dragster in 1971.

Dick, The 60 ft challange was the result of two old farts jabbing at each other a few months before the last Norwalk event. The " back and forth" between Ray and Fred had me laughing for months. That was the main reason I was dejected about missing that event. I promised myself if at all possible , I would go to Clay City, to see the re-match. One of the smartest things I have ever done. I will never miss another, except for bad health or family emergency. It was worth every mile driven. ( 1,000 ) one way. It appears that maybe Ray has biten off more than he can chew. Rumor has it that Bob's car is going to leave hard. 900 hp has a way of doing that. Ray is not one to get scared, so he will have something up his sleeve, and I will be there to see it. :p :p

Chevymusclecars,
I talked to the track owner last time when he stopped me from racing that my rail had a 1964 409 in it and the chassis was a very early rear engine dragster, early 1970s. He just kept saying that it was "new technology" :dunno :bang ... I don't think his opion has changed cause 2 years ago it was also 1972 and earlier and I called about a month before the event and was told by one of the track officals that I was welcome. Anyway I hope there is a Clay City cause I'd love to see you all again.

Hey, Jim, we've got to cover more than 500 miles, can we still come :)?
All kidding aside, assuming I can make a slight change in my schedule with some buddies from high school, I plan on driving out there. Talked to TomO and he wants to make the trek as well. If his car isn't ready, my plans are to kidnap him and make him "road trip" with me :). Saw Phil Reed this weekend, along with Roy Merritt (Tripower), and asked them to set the date aside as well :). Hopefully Missouri will be well represented!
In 2005 I had so much fun and I didn't even have a vehicle then! Let's hope it's even better (is that possible?) and perhaps we'll even see a bit of "aluminum" on some of the cars (Bob? Jim? others?) :) :) :).

Robert, (RSTREET),
if you start from my house, it's only 396 miles to norwalk :rofl
all kidding aside, i see good deals on 24ft enclosed trailers all the time. i even use mine as a portable garage. my red 63 is in there now. clean, dry and mouse free. and not taking up valuable garage space.
i've come to the conclusion that a guy needs both types of trailer.
hope to complete and have my white 63 at norwalk this time. if not, i will bring the red one.
since this pic was taken, the doors, fenders, grill and decklid have been painted white on the inside and installed. the battery lines are done and the brake system will be next. we have had highs in the 20s and single digit mornings here for several weeks. everything outside has 4 inches or more of ice on it. progress has been slow.

I realize that I could sleep in a 24 footer but I don't see any deals over here on my side of the bay on 22-24 footers. The car trailers that are for sale are much longer because they are used on the race circuit. I think some people are getting out the race circuit since Delmar Raceway is close to being sold as a housing development. Cecil County will be the closest race track to here then.
I had thought about storing a car in an enclosed trailer also. I hope to run across a 65-67 convertible some day to put a stroked 409 in then I will have to buy one:D :D

Thanks for the great idea of driving it   but remember this is a 348 w/auto that was freshened up in 93, not an awsum 409. I won't live long enough for it to get there, plus I should have a roll back to follow it. But I have a new wire harness now thanks to Phil:bow so I can replace the tired old one .Maybe the closest member to me, Dick MacKenzie would drive it to Ohio. Although he has seen the car so that probably won't work either.

What is the minimum length for a enclosed trailer for a 62 Impala???
jim_ss409
02-20-2007, 10:28 PM
My 62 fits fine in a 20' trailer, it might even fit in an 18 footer. But many of the shorter trailers have pretty light axles so you've got to check. We got a deal on the used 20 footer but normaly I think a 24 footer's a better way to go because you've got lots of extra room for cupboards and stuff up front.

in 2003 i bought a 1994 24' wide body pace shadow with interior cabinetry, 12V and 120V lighting, vinyl floor, 4 brakes, torsion axles, and a walk-on roof with ladder for $5000 delivered.
there were plenty to choose from in that range and the guy knew it. he sweetened the deal by including a winch installed and 2000w generator. SOLD.
because i bought it from photo's i neglected to ask how many nuts hold the wheels on or the letter (load) rating of the tires. 5 lugs are the #3500 lb. units and came with "C" tires. i forget the load rating, but it is at only 50 psi max. I purchased a new set of "D" tires with it's load at 65 PSI.
so with a #7700 lb. rating on the light duty trailer minus 3900 lb. impala leaves 3800 lb. for trailer weight and xtra contents. I'm only guessing the trailer empty weight is #3500 so you dont put too much else in it.
the 15" "D" load rated tires will more than exceed #7700 lb. and it feels safe.
but i would buy one 28' with six lug wheels and "D" tires if i ever get another chance.
BTW: with the 63 in towing position, there is about 4 feet to the face of the cabinets. plenty of room for the mini-bike etc. if you really had to, you could sleep in front of the car.

It looks like we're going to have a good sized group at Norwalk. I don't know if the Clay City thing is going to fly but it's not looking good right now. I think a few guys might be waiting to see what happens there before committing to Norwalk.
Last time we were at Norwalk they wouldn't let Tony Salins run with his 409 powered dragster because it was a rear engine design and they thought it violated the pre-1973 rule. I was thinking though, a guy with a new fiberglass Willys on a new frame with a modern crate engine would be welcome. If a fiberglass copy of an old car is okay, then why not a copy of an early rear engine dragster? Don Garlits was running his in 1971 and he wasn't the first, just the most famous and successful. I even found this 1972 patent for a rear engine dragster.... http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT3806149&id=JHsrAAAAEBAJ&dq=1972+Rear+Engine+Dragsters&jtp=1#PPA22,M1
Tony and Bonnie live way down in Oklahoma now so I don't know if they would want to come this far, but if they do, maybe we could think of a way to lobby the track officials to let them run.
It looks like we're going to have lots of cool 348-409 cars there and it's a lot of fun. They have photographers at the starting line that take good pictures of your car. In fact, lots of people just cruise up the track just for the photo of their car on a famous track. I'm glad to hear Denny's coming, wait till you see that car go.:beerbang And I hope Bob, (walkerheaders) gets his new car done in time. I can't wait to see how it looks.

Just got back from the shop in Indy. Took 3 1/2 hrs in an evil ice storm. Had, that old Berretta sideways more times than I want to remember, but I got a finished set sitting in the basement waiting to get cleaned up. Doing some more double checking on dimensions and checking on their weight, bare. We lowered the oil return as far as we could. The decks are real thick so we got the hole a bit lower than stock. The beat way to get the oil out of the head might be an external line.
Denny, I would have called you back but was low on battery and was saving the last call for 911 in case I parked it on the roof.
The other 2 sets are getting seats and guides tomorrow and one of them gets some port work early in the week.

Me and Ray have talked and were going to pay the $75 and stay on the pit side, like we did in 05.We have lots of room to park as a group, electric, showers,we can park and camp next to the fence, and for the guys that are going to take fun runs its going be easier on there cars, instead of driving to there campsites on the spectator side.See you in July Bill

Jim
I keep looking for parts for the 62 and have never found any side molding and a few other parts so it has gone to storage. I bought a 63 Biscayne that will get a 409 and go to the Blue Suede Cruise. I have no idea what color it is going to be, currently gold, but it is a Grandma Biscayne with no options.

I talked to Pete at Norwalk, and he agreed that if we wanted to park and camp as a group that the on the pit side would be the best for us.In 2005 it worked good for us.heres a comparsion on parking on the pit side instead of the spectator side.
Street Rod Participant $35 +$25 Primitive Camping = $60.park on spectator side
1.Admission for 2 persons
2.Camping spot
3.Free Fun Runs
4.Goodie bag
5.Friday night cookout
Race Car Fun Runs $75 park on pit side
1.Admission for 2 persons
2.Camping spot
3.Free Fun Runs
4.Electric
5.we can park together
6.The showers are on the pit side
7.We can camp next to the fence and view the track on pit side
8.Short drive back to pits instead of driving back to your camping spot after a run
9.Goodie bag
10.Friday night cookout

Fatride just tipped me off to something I didn't know. It looks like there will be some racing classes at Norwalk for the Blue Suede Cruise.:deal From what I can see there's at least three different classes but there is a limit on the number of participants so anybody that wants to race might have to register early. It looks like a $75 fee covers the entry for your car and two adults and two children for the weekend. I'm thinking that since I'm bringing a race car I might as well race. Here's the link... http://www.summitmotorsportspark.com/main-news/nostalgia-race-classes-come-to-blue-suede-cruise/

Hello everyone, I'm Pete Woodruff from Summit Motorsports Park. I would also like to thank Jim K. for contacting me about a reserved pit area for the 348 - 409 group and following up when he didn't get a quick response. Norwalk Raceway Park is now Summit Motorsports Park and also an NHRA national event track. We've had a very busy winter here in Norwalk, Ohio; spending about 6 million dollars in facility improvements, including a fully paved pit (Budweiser) side complete with new lighting and additional power boxes. I will be holding space in the pit area for members of this forum that pre-register by the July 16th deadline.
A Blue Suede Cruise entry is $35 and includes your '72 or older vehicle and 2 adults for the weekend. Pre-registration also includes a free summer cook-out on Friday evening. We offer all of the usual "street rod" activities, but our big attraction is nearly unlimited "fun runs" on the quarter mile all weekend! We don't have any organized racing program and track prep is minimal, but you will get a time slip with all the incrementals. The camping cost is $32.50 including all fees; electric hook-ups are plentiful; pump-out is available from our porta-john service. I have plenty of space available but it's all pavement, so tent camping and fires aren't options in the pit area. We do have an on-site primitive campground available at the same cost for the tent people, but it's on the spectator side of the facility. My e-mail is pwoodruff@SummitMotorsportsPark.com if anyone has any specific questions. I will also answer questions posted on this thread.

(1) 72 or older cars, register as street rod participants for $35.Add $25 if your camping for the 27,28 July
(2) When you call to register, tell them your with the 348-409 club, and they will send you a Placard in the mail to place in your window,to tell the track personal where you will park.
(3) We will be parking and camping together as a club in the pits
(4) The pits are all new asphalt and no grass, for members with tents (like me) no tent stakes in the asphalt.Pete recommends to bring empty 5 gal pails and fill them with water to stake your tent,or you can camp on the spectators side in the grass
(5) Members that are already registered, call Norwalk 419-668-5555 and they will send you a Placard
(6) any questions, post them or call 419-668-5555,or send Pete a PM (he's a member of our forum, screen name Pete)

I think the majority of guys that travel a fair distance trailer their cars. You can bring more stuff that way and if you decide to run it down the track,:beerbang and break something,:grumble: at least you can get it home.

Just curious.

More info on your gasser. What does it weigh, engine mods, gears, tranny, etc.
Just curious.
It weighs about 3,400 with driver.
The engine's a basic stroker that we originally built for street use on pump gas, but we built a tunnel ram for it and this year we're putting on a set of aluminum heads, a bigger cam and a set of Holley 660 carbs.
476ci
9.75 to 1 compression
250-258 @.050 solid roller with .714 lift
It's got a manual shift TH350 tranny with a 4,000rpm stall converter and a Dana 60 with 4.11 gears. It has a four link rear suspension and a straight front axle on leaf springs. The engine's set back about six inches. It hooks up well and goes straight,,, our best 60' time so far is 1.48
We managed to squeak into the high tens last year but we're hoping to run mid tens this year.
We built the car last winter and it's not exactly done to show car standards but it's good enough for a race car. We're looking forward to seeing all the 348-409 guys at Norwalk this year. Here's some progress pics...

Jim,
Just FYI, Allen George (Bluescreamer) and Ray Lehberger (Dynoray) are also coming. They will be traveling with us, we have their hotel rooms booked. I thought they would have stated it publically on the forum, after my post, but as of yet, they didn't. I wasn't going to let the cat out of the bag, just wanted you to know for your count.
Steven
P.S. CCChris is also coming with us, he is Carl's right hand man.

I know what you mean. I would have enjoyed going to that west coast event you had in the washington area last year I think it was. The scenery and show setting looked great near a river or the pacific.
For our "get together" this year I would tow to phil's back yard if we had it there even though he is another day of towing from here compared to Norwalk.(might do it anyway:rofl it would be like one of the chevy chase movies, could you picture phil waking up one morning and us eastern shore boys myself,MacKenzie and PaintJohn1 are on his lawn!)

Buy the mansion next door to Ronnie Russel. It comes with 30 acres and is reasonably priced at $300,000. That would put you closer to the center of the nation!!

Ray,I sent Pete a email about us tent pitching members on grass, here's the email Pete sent back to me
Hi Jim,
We've never sold out all of the tent campsites at Blue Suede, but if it did happen we would simply "over-flow" out to the north on the grass area beyond the campground. Do you have a campsite yet? They are approximately 20x50 and you would have room for more then one tent.
Your group is really turning out for the event! Do the members that are "racing" know that it will be "fun runs" on a track with minimal track prep? I've already talked with a couple of members with fast cars and they are planning to hook-up with my Nostalgia Super Stock group; in fact, they have run with that group in the past. Let me know if there is anything else you need.
Pete

Subject: Grassy area to pitch a tent
Hi Pete,
After all the grass camp sites are given out for the Blue Suede Cruise,do you have any sites leftover? I don't know how many are pitching tents, but I do at least 2 so far.We don't need any electric, just a piece of grass for about 4 tents.
We have 30 members attending,18 409 powered cars 11 will be racing and 5of the 409's are 10 sec cars,so things are going well. Thanks Jim Kwiatkowski

Hey Jim,
First I would like to say this site and these guys are lucky to have you and your hard work putting this together. I contacted Pete Woodruff and he requested I send him a picture of our dragster, but like I told you guys all those months ago, they do no feel our car fits into the "Blue Suede Cruise" program and will not let us participate. I gotta be honest, I sure wish there was a Clay City this year. I remember back at the 2005 "BS":rofl :rofl Cruise that a lot of the people with street rods came by and seemed to like the car. Maybe Pete and his gang don't understand the people that attend this event. Anyway, Pete was very nice about it but that is just an awefully long way to go to be a spectator. Thanks again for all your work, Jim.

Maybe someone can burn you a copy and bring it to Norwalk. If not, I'll have my copy there. You can borrow it and take it home and make a copy. The only thing is my copy doesn't always play quite right,,, the problem might be in my DVD player though.:scratch

I can also burn everyone's pictures for future promoting of the event. They will deteriate(cd's) if conditions are correct. Jim I'm still hoping for another 348 to come for mine to bond with.

Robert, things have been slow lately,we have 1 new member jr.W and his dad might attend.I have heard 2 members maybe more might not attend :dunno
The Blue Suede Cruise thread, has to be the biggest thread this forum has had,we have had 10,233 views and 235 views :doh
I've tried to start a thread in a section that has allot of views and no more new or old members will attend the Cruise :dunno I do know one thing, you will not get a Bigger Mini Convention in this Country other than the Mid-West :dunno The Mid-West must have the most members (besides Texas)
