I remember a block I had in the 70s-)don't rmemeber what year or code had a leaking sleeve I didnlt know about and messed the whole thing up) was more open in the area under the oikl filler tube than my 64 or 65 low perf blocks. Something on the hi perf blocks?
The pictures of the block in the thread below on the E bay block reminded me of it. It look smore solid like my 64 and 65.

Skip, I know of no differance in low perf. and high perf. blocks. I have always assumed they were all the same castings with some different internal parts. Maybe others have more exact information.

Ronnie,
I believe this is what you are referring to. The top pic is the oil fill area on the 63 and earlier 409 and 348 blocks and the lower pic is the 64 422 and later blocks. The pics are from an article on Curt Harvey and the 409 from the August 1991 issue of All Chevy magazine.

Thanks Cecil, I am familiar with the differance shown in the article, but from what I understand from Skip, is that he is referring to the area near the pan rail near the dip stick opening. I have never paid attention to this area , as to whether there is a differance between casting numbers. My understanding is that all #422s are the same, #068s , all the same, etc. and that the exhaust notch was added after casting, to make the truck blocks. Dont think there is differance between hp block and low perf. block. At least none that I am aware of. If that is incorrect, please correct me.

I guess I misunderstood the question. I am not aware of any differences between the hiperf or loperf blocks within the same casting number other than the relief cutouts as you mentioned. I thought the question was about the difference under the oil fill area.:doh

Cecil. It is not you that mis-read, it is ME. Skips question deals with exactly the differances you showed. Dont ask how I could mis-read that , but I did. I blame it on senility........ :doh :doh

Robert, I think to be safe, from now on I will read a question and then log off, go sit in a quiet corner and re-read the question several times. I may not know the answer but at least I would like to know the question. :rofl Thanks to Cecil for not busting my chops. He showed great restraint............:cheers
