Just wanted to let everyone know that if you see the date of 12-31-1969 at the bottom of the forum home page in the "what's going on" area, your not having an acid trip flashback from the 60's, :D there is something gone goofy with the forum. I'm currently pulling my hair out trying to fix this but looks like it's gonna be a while.
Hope to have this fixed soon...

I was on an all expenses paid 2 year vacation in Guam watching the B-52s go out on their bombing missions in the morning and coming back in the evening. My Guam bomb was a 66 VW bus. Yuck!:scratch

I had just finished my first semester of engineering school (college) and was scared silly that I wasn't going to pass any of my classes or keep my scholarship :). I also gave up my S-1 student designation that month, becoming 1-A or whatever the draftable status was labelled during that era. I remember visiting my older brother who was in the Army and stationed stateside at the time. Dad was also Army, and I thought maybe that might be my future...
And I was driving a 1961 Pontiac Star Chief 4 door car that cost me $115. Sold the 1961 Belair for $50 to get it...
Cheers!

That's true. I would be surprised if it's only 3 ft. I remember when a fully loaded Buff crashed on take off from Anderson AFB. As the wings started flying and rising up, one wing kept going up and broke off. They went off the 200 foot cliff into the ocean. We had a ship involved in the recovery of the bodies and bombs that were precariously scattered on the edge of the reef that dropped into the Marianas Trench which is the deepest part of the ocean. Bad day for the bomber boys. The rest of them kept on going.

JimK:
I don't know on the 52's but on a C5 I think I remember that full tip range of the wing tip is 11 feet from on the ground fueled to flying. In Dec 69 I was working in NC then drafted in 70 that fall.

Hey Bob
it's a database error. There are a few different reasons this can happen. Has the forum database been imported into a new one? Have you or the SA (System Admin) upgraded the PHP version? There are other Q's as well.
Check the PHP logging and the database log for any consitant errors, if neiter is on turn it on and pull them after a few hours. If you need any help PM me and I'll help where I can. Not doing much anyway since I am out on vaction till 07 and it's too cold to play with the car..

I spent New Years at Camp Enari outside of Pleiku, or somewhere close. Maybe An Khe or Camp Holloway depending on what was up at the time...in any event it must not have been a memorable occasion! My car at home at the time was a '57 Chevy wagon with a 327, 4 speed and fenderwell headers. Like a dummy, I'd already traded off a '56 Nomad with a W motor...gave new meaning to young and dumb.

Dick,
Were you flying the C-141 Starlifter? If you were, you guys sure know how to fly and take care of us wounded. That was one of the smoothness rides I ever had in a aircraft. By the way thanks for the ride home. Couldn't thank them back then, so your the next best thing.

Dave,
I wish I could say I flew 141s, actually I flew "on" 141s. Since I was a med tech (Staff Sgt then) they didn't let me drive much! :rofl They kept me in the back with you troops. When did you you come back? I wonder how close we got to each other.

Dick,
Best I can do is injured Apirl 28,1968. Then 95th evac in Da Nang for a month. That takes care of May. Japan for about 45 days, had to drain a wound before I could fly. That moves me to the middle of July. Then it was to the states, Japan AF base (?) to a AF base near Sacramento (?) by the way of Alaska. Stayed on the same plane the whole time. Stayed there about 15 days before being sent to El Paso Tx (Ft. Bliss) for another 3 months. Must have seen all the AF bases between Calf. & Texas on that trip. About 8 take-offs & landings. That was in another C-141. Then it was from Texas on to Scott AF base in Ill. for another 20 days. To get to Scott, it was another 8 to 10 landing. Last time in the air was in a 4 engine prop plane around the Great Lakes to Selfridge NG base near Detroit Mi another 6 or 7 landings. All this time I was on a litter.
SORRY for going on & on but everyone treated me well the whole time. Army & Air Force

First off I`d like to say I`m glad those of you here that served in Nam made it home.
In 69 I was in 10th grade and was fighting the war on this end.
Not disrespecting the troupes but voicing my opinion of the war in protests.
I had many older friends there, most made it home, a few came home damaged, and some lost their lives.
They stopped the draft less then a week before my lottery number would have been called up.
I lost a friend in 69 that I had known when i was younger and still to this day see his smiling face.
He lost his life 2-25-69 in the battles in Kien Hoa Province, the “Speedy Express” and “Pacification” along with many other soldiers. A very bloody battle from what I have researched.
Tom Grose was a SGT in the Army D Troop 3RD of the 5TH Air Calvary.
My heart goes out to all that served and those now fighting and dying as we get ready for the Holidays.
I wish them the best and hope for a speedy end to the fighting in the Middle East,,, Jim

I had just gotten back from Pleiku Air Base after 1 year in country. Camp enari and camp holloway were just across the valley from Pleiku Air base. I remember several times watching 50-100 hueys taking off from Holloway and heading north, also the arc lights dropping on the local mountains. I was stationed on "Peacock" the radar sight that guided air traffic to the north [Det. 2, 620th TCS} God Bless us all that served over there and made it back and more importantly to those that died serving our country.
Merry Christmas to one and all.

Tom, about Pleiku Air Base. We used to be impressed with the food and other amenities of civilization. In other words, we were pretty jealous of the USAF guys and went over whenever we had the chance. We always appreciated the support we got from the USAF though, as others have mentioned.
I flew VR out of Holloway, Enari, An Khe and other places around there for my first year, then went down to Nha Trang and eventually TSN before coming home for good. I met a lot of good folks and some of us are reconnecting after all of these years.
Back to cars!
