I've got an old 194 inline six. I'm talking old. It's a 1932. I've been trying to get it to run but no luck. The only wires I have hooked up are the battery pos to starter. Batt neg to engine block. Coil pos to batt pos. Coil neg to distributor. I'm using a 12V battery and 12V coil. After cranking the engine for about a minute the battery is dead and the coil is very hot. The engine pops a few times during cranking but that's it. Why the hot coil? Do I need a resistor from batt to coil? How do I know if the condensor is bad? My points are set at .020" (factory is .018) and they are new. Also new cap, rotor, plugs and wires. The only thing old is the condensor.

YES, you need the resistor. 1.80 ohms, like the ones for 1955 thru 1961 Chevy, NAPA p/n ICR13. That is why the coil is hot and possibly, the faces of the points carbon'd over by now.

Check the wires to, and inside the distributor from the coil and points once again.

Sounds like the carb may also have plugged jets as well.

IgnitionMan, Thanks for the part number on the resistor. I went into Napa and told the kid behind the counter I needed a ballast resistor and got a blank stare. I gave him the part number and the color came back into his face. I know the carb is good because I just rebuilt it. I'm going to check everything again and completely tear apart the distributor and redo that too. Hopefully it's something simple.
