I have recentlytried to register an Impala that I purchased, cant find the VIN# I noticed that the insdie fender door openining, drivers side has fallen off. does anyone know where else I can find the VIN? thanks:dunno

It's stamped on top of the frame rail forward of the rear wheel. However, you will need to remove the body or cut out the floor out to see it..
Siince you are in CA, the local DMV will require to go visit the Auto Theft Detail at your local CHP office for an inspection. Since the car is so old, the the young officers probably won't know where the hide out number is. However, they will not want to damage your car to check the number so you will be refered back to DMV and they will give your a DMV ID number stciker.
If the car came from CA, they won't bother to check it; just get a blank tag and restamp it...

My 62 frame was stamped back near the rear axle too, but it was also stamped a little clearer in the area near the two little bolts that hold the base of the gas peddle. This is on the top of the frame so it would be almost impossible to see, a small mirror might just work.:dunno
