Anybody got a line on a good price for axle bearings. Ratech and Kanter and ShowCars are $100 each. Has anyone had any luck pressing the old off and re-using them? Suburban Driveline tells me they usually get damaged.

They usually do get damaged once removed. That's a hard nut to crack. The good guy wholesale price, in quantity is about $80 ea. I think cheaper Asian imports may now be available but I'm not sure if I would trust those. I think CPP sells those. I wouldn't doubt that the ones from those companies you mentioned are also the same Asian import.

models, If you can't find them wholesale,,,,, Nobody can!! I'm afraid they have us right where they want us. First thing I do with a parts car is to pull the axles and store them. Yea, they are old bearings, but a $100 is a lot of money to me. If you find an outlet for new bearings, let us know. Thanks.........

Take the bearing to a good wholesale bearing house and have them match it and the price should be way lower then any automotive outlet.
I do this all the time,,dq

Berry bearing is 2 buildings down from me, I'll stop in on the way home. Anybody got a GM part number for them? Ratech shows RW607NR or 5573 or 9110.

I have started using www.rockauto.com for my parts. They ship direct, very quickly and have very good prices on Moog, Felpro etc.

They have an easy to navigate drop down menu. $80.79 rear axle bearing

I haven't put a bearing on an axle in 40 years and they used to be $20 pressed off and on including bearing. DQ is right about wholesale bearing supply. I had sealed bearings in a Haybine from New Holland that never stayed sealed more than two seasons. They were $105 apiece 20 years ago, at the bearing whoulesaler they were $45, not New Holland but American made. :deal Roy

if your bearing comp.has a hard time call kaman industry's or motion.

Got them locally for $89.00 ea. tax, shipping included. National brand. Ecklers has them for $69.00. I was told they were offshore quality. Motion is down the street from me and said they are owned by NAPA, $102.00. The guy at NAPA says he is pretty shure theirs are SKF.
So if anybody has some bearing backing plates they want to sell, I could just keep my old axles intact. I did buy Moser 17 spline axles kind of on a whim and now it is costing me a fortune to button it all up. Thanks for all the help.

Extra spacer included. I would guess for the 58, but don't know for shure. I don't remember it being used on the 62 axles, but then I did them over 10 years ago.
Anybody know what they are for?

There was a bearing change in 57- can't remember if it was wider or narrower than 55-56 but the bearing retainer was changed accordingly. In 59 the axles were lengthened to allow wider brake drums and a 1/2 " wider tread- there may have been another bearing change to go with it. I wonder if that spacer might make the bearing fit both applications.:scratch

That's not really a spacer. It's a retainer which goes on after the bearing. I got bearings for a 57 a few months ago from O'Reilly. $34.00 per side. If you can find someone who knows what he's doing, he can remove and replace that bearing, etc without damaging anything. I've done it every time except the very first time. It requires a particular bearing splitter and a very good bearing press, such as they have in good auto repair shops.

The rear brake drums were the same from 1951 through 1970. It was the front drums that were widened, about 1/4", in 1959.

Your'e right about only the front brakes being wider in 59 but although I didn't make it very clear, my point was that the rear axles were lengthened in 59 to accomodate the 1/2" wider tread due to the wider front brakes.

I did look before I bought mine. I needed new bearings for the new axles. Will have to press off perfectly good bearings and ring to get the bearing backing plates off the old axles.

How would a sealed bearing dry out? You don't keep them in bags when they're installed on the car...

hi,,,first a sealed bearing is not air tight. petroleum based grease will dry out
just setting around. it is like bread stays fresh in the bag. Some of the better
made u.s.a. made bearing comp. now use synthetic grease. this up's the shelf
life from 3 to 5 years depending on storage. A bearing in use will keep the oils
in the mix, i think these bearing are rated at about 30,000 hrs. or about 3 years at 24/7 at 3600 rpm. most ball bearing have this rating. with a standard
c-3 fit. and petroleum filled.
