Am painting just my fan shroud, fan and attachments on 64 Impala SS. The surrounding compartment paint is older but is real nice.

This website's paint page suggest amongst a few others: KRYLON SEMI-FLAT.

I painted the fan with it, and it looks too flat. Even my older paint looks slightly glossier. I primed the fan shroud, then shot it with the semi-flat, and it still looks too flat. Maybe Im used to the "over-restored" look but I am thinking of going to the semi gloss.

Should I get the POR or Eastwood jazz or is the Krylon Semi gloss as good? Is the eastwood/POR worth the wait? (Mail order)

Experienced suggestions welcome.

Ditxler used to have a Low Gloss Black lacquer. We used it on all engine brackets, air cleaners, radiators, fan shroud, radiator support and inner fenders. It was "supposed" to be the exact shade that the factory used. We really liked it.

Sorry but I do not have a number for it. Try your local PPG paint store.

robota, Swing by the Wal-mart and buy one can of Plastikote " black satin" ( in the paint dept. ,, not in automotive paint ) . and give it a try and see what you think. I think it is a great shade but have no idea if it is close to the original color.

I had great luck with eastwoods chassis black. It has just the right amount of gloss for the inner fenders, firewall, etc. I used it on just about everything. You can buy it by the quart of in spray cans.

OK,,, so I`ll admit it,,, the only thing I`ll EVER buy from Walmart is their paint.

Forget the Plastikote,,, get the $.94 cheap stuff ColorPlace in semi-gloss .
Extremly good paint !!! High pigment and covers great ! Drys fast too,,,
The semi-gloss is between semi-gloss and semi-flat in shine.
It also touches up without showing any blend marks.

I`m sold on this stuff !!!

Give it a try,,,dq

dq, You are correct ( of course ) I checked the " black satin " this morning and it is Colorplace, not Plasticote, probably spelled Plasticoat. I have bought gallons of Colorplace grey and flat black primer over the years for small parts . Just as you say, 94cents in the universal pain dept. Same paint in the automotive section---- $3.49. :)

I prefer the high-heat semi-gloss that is available at O'Reilly, or NAPA, or Autozone. It looks great, almost perfect, and generally won't start peeling in a couple of months. It costs more than .99 but it has worked excellent for me in every application.

I always us Mar-Hyde Satin trim paint under the hood because it is lacquer. I have had problems with the enamel under the hood.
