I'm a Restoration Specialist in Engine Restoration. I have also been active in restoring TriFives. I've had over 40 yrs experience and have built 100s of engines. I joined this forum mainly because I have been involved recently with a '61 Bubbletop interior, windows and dash restoration. The same car had a 350 fitted, so we are interested in returning it to stock drive train. I'm on the lookout for a '61 Triple Carb 348 engine to rebuild back to original appearance and functionality.

Welcome aboard, that's a great project. I assume it would be the Impala, not the Belair?

Are you looking for a specific date code and an "FH" block from late 1960-61? It would be easy to clone one unless the owner needs to have "period correct" casting dates. The tripowers of 1961 had either 280 horses (hydraulic lifters FA suffix) or 350 horses (solid lifters with the FH suffix code). They are out there :).

If you have some time, consider posting a few pics of your project. We all like to see pictures :).

Cheers!

Thanks Tom, the objective is to achieve the "look" not to have it show correct, so the FA engine would be the one to go for, I guess. We're mainly concerned about getting all of the original brackets, air cleaner etc because, living here in New Zealand, you just can't go to a supplier and source the stuff, so it's important to get as much of the original OEM equipment as possible. I just finished a '57 2x4BC FD suffix 245hp engine with all of the original gear including the bat wing. It took me 4 yrs to track down all of the pieces, so I don't want that to happen with the 348 3x2BC engine.

Hi Guys, Gav, Phil - I'm in New Plymouth, the '61 belongs to friends/customers of mine. I don't suppose you guys have a 348 3x2BC hidden away in the shed LOL.

I'm up that way around mid May with probably flying in to New Plymouth on a Sunday arvo and at this point May 17th. If you are up for a meeting PM me your details and we'll see what can be sorted.
