    Truck blocks

    Promoting the 348-409 legacy?

Right now, the 409 is unique. If they were re-produced in large {cheap} numbers, what would that do to the value of ours, that we spent dollars on? I like the fact that what I have is rare. I probably will not ever sell my 409 car but I still would not like to see the value of it go down.

    Sleeving a 48/09

Why does everyone worry about the notches? You can raise the compression all you want with pistons. It's not as if you can't get enough compression.

    Low perf. heads

Jim, That is the cam I am using. Also I am using Offey low rise manifold with a one inch spacer.

    Low perf. heads

Three Duces, I just built an engine with 817 heads. Stroker, 296 cam, 2 fours, etc. Anyway the engine dynoed 485 hp and 547 torque. As you see, I don't believe you have to have 290 heads to make good horsepower. By the way, Curt Harvey said if I had used pump gas instead of race gas it would...

    Isky 286 cam

Ross, I am using the 296 in a stroker. It has lopey idle but levels out at about 1500 rpm's. Has pretty good vacum. About 16. Makes good horsepower and tourqe, even down low. I am really happy with this cam. It sounds like a strong street engine not like an engine that only belongs on the strip.

    Id 348

Thanks for the info. I certainly will not scrap this engine. If I don't put it in something maybe someone else will need it. I share your feelings about any w motor. That's why I bought this motor. I have a stroked 409 I am putting in a 61 bubbletop. I just love w motors.

    Id 348

Thanks, That fits. It came out of a 59 Truck. What is throwing me off is the dipstick is on the right hand side like a 409. Also the casting no. is 3755011 which my book says is passenger car. Any other thoughts? Is this motor good for anything or did I waste my money?

    curt harvey, MR. 409

Phil Reed gets a lot of his engine parts from Curt. Both guys are honest and very helpful. Curt is a little slow but you will get your parts and they will be the best quality. He has some parts no one else has access to. For instance racing bearings for the 409. He is the most knowledgeable in...

    new 409

Ronnie, sorry I'm kinda new here on the boards and missed your message. Yes it's going in a 61 bubbletop. It will be mostly street I doubt I will ever take it to the strip, but I will defiantly get on it when I drive it. I will be at good guys first of Oct. with my 66 El Camino 427 4spd red...

    new 409

The cam is the cam described by Bob. Isky 296 hydraulic flat tappet cam. I bought all my stuff from Curt Harvey. The idle is just what I wanted. Lopey but doesn't sound like it should only be at the strip. 10 to 1 compression. Just like Bob said, 12 to 13 vacum. It pulls best in the 4400 to...

    new 409

Used 4.00 stroke. 2.19 valves ported and polished the heads, 296 Isky cam, offy manifold ported, 2 600cfm edelbrock carbs. I forgot to mention those numbers were pulling a water pump. My builder did not have a water manifold to fit a 409.
