    63 Impala - brake issues

Good Morning All, Wanted to post what was found on my 63 causing the rear wheel to “lock up”. In short, it was a tooth from the pinion gear. (Zoom in on the “6 o’clock” position in the pinion gear pic) I’m thankful this only happened as I was backing out of the driveway. No other damage...

    63 Impala - brake issues

Will probably be into November, but I’ll get an answer & post to the thread. Appreciate everyone’s input. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been on here, but I’m relieved to see a lot of familiar names still on here.

Seems like my lug nut torque question sent this thread down a rabbit hole! Thanks to @nana1962409 for posting the pic. I have the same shop manual and didn’t see that listed. I‘m going to call a few places today to see who can pull an axle and look into this further. I’m missing driving the 409!

    63 Impala - brake issues

I’m a little “leary“ about it being on jack stands & running the car. (Probably because I’ve never done it before.) If I locate the jack stands underneath each side of the axle, would that work? My jack won’t work under the differential. It’s too far underneath the car & I can’t operate the jack.

Don - I am able to “rock” the driver’s side axle back and forth, but that’s it. The unit won’t turn more than that small amount of “play”.

    63 Impala - brake issues

Car was in neutral while on the jack stands. I’m able to manually turn the passenger rear wheel. Driver‘s side wheel (with tire & drum removed) essentially won’t budge.

The wheel won’t turn. With or without the drum on the car. I don't believe it has anything to do with the brakes.

it’s almost like the wheel is locked up. There’s no skid mark, but something is definitely bound up on that axle or that side of the axle.

Great as that’s what I used. Thank you!

    63 Impala - brake issues

Quick update: Had rear end on jack stands & removed rear drum of driver‘s side. Drum came off without a lot of fanfare, so I’m guessing it’s NOT the E-brake hanging up. Right tire turns, but other wheel will not move. Something has got it “hung up” Axle bearing bad or perhaps something in the...

    63 Impala - brake issues

Update on this as I jacked up rear end : Left rear tire will NOT turn. Right rear turns. Could this mean my E brake is hung up on the left side or an issue with the axle/bearing/rear end? What’s the remedy?

    63 Impala - brake issues

I’ll jack the car up & check the situation in the rear tires. I do not use the E brake as a general rule in the garage. Appreciate the suggestions.

    63 Impala - brake issues

Greetings all, Been a “minute” since I’ve posted but wanted to ask the Forum. Went for a ride yesterday & zero issues. Went to leave for Cars & Coffee this AM and noticed brakes are grabbing intermittently. In backing out of the driveway, car suddenly stops, then releases, then stops again...
