    Wrong Flex Plate?

Well, it's taken a while to finally get this done. Thanks to all of you for your inputs. I made an attempt to knock the weight off with an air chisel, but stopped when it became apparent it would generate the same mess as grinding it off. In the end I went with Jim409_Pontiac's and...

    Wrong Flex Plate?

Leo, Yes it looks like the picture in the ebay ad, with the big weight. I looked closer at my photos and it looks like maybe 3 welds. One at each end and one in the middle. If I ground away the welds the weight should drop out?

    Wrong Flex Plate?

Thanks for the confirmation. No 454 crank. The vibration was most noticeable at certain RPMs. In between it didn't seem too bad, but maybe that was denial. I'll look again, but it may be just two welds to grind off. If I can get it off, may not be neutral balanced but it would be better...

    Wrong Flex Plate?

I think my car has the wrong flex plate. I have a 58 chevy with a 348. Last year I had a 700R4 installed with a rebuilt engine. I've been having a vibration. Reading the threads here indicates that the 348 is internally balanced and should have a compatible damper and flexplate. Looking...

    Fan Spacer

Thanks for the input Dan. I'll first try it without the spacer. Your pictures are good enough to figure out how far to cut the shroud, if it gets to that. Randy

    Fan Spacer

Thanks, Don. That's what I think I will try first. Removing the spacer looks like it would leave the fan half in, half out of the shroud. See if that gets more air moving through the radiator when the car is stopped.

    Fan Spacer

So the correct configuration for a 348 Impala would be a different shroud (thinner), no spacer, and a fan clutch? With a thinner shroud, perhaps the fan would be in the same place. Would this Show Cars part be suitable for the clutch...

    Fan Spacer

What's the fan spacer for? I have a 58 Impala with a 348, 4BBL and the posts on dealing with 348s and 409s that get hot when stopped and idling have been very helpful. It's clear from reading them that my fan spacer puts the fan too far inside the shroud and the fan's not pulling enough air...

    700R4 in 58 Chevy

Bungy, you are correct that I'm looking for the indicator. The Eckler's part goes would replace the original indicator in the dash, so that's not quite what I was hoping to find. I've found a couple of places that sell the PG or TG indicators for the 58. I might need to copy one of those...

    700R4 in 58 Chevy

I'm thinking about changing the PG to a 700R4. The car has a 348, 4BBL with a 3.36 rear end. This site has a lot of good information and I've perused the different sites suggested. I want to keep the original column to keep a stock look. I haven't seen an 700R4 indicator for a 58 column...

    Cam Question

It's a cruiser with a Powerglide in an stock Impala. Rumpety idle doesn't really fit the car. Is there a potential concern of pistons hitting valves? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!! Randy

    Cam Question

I've run across an engine that has an advertised cam duration of 224 (.050) for a 9.5 compression 348. I've seen a number of posts that a cam duration for a 348 should be less than that (218 recommended in one post) unless special provisions are taken. Is this duration something I should...

    Incorrect Block/Head Combination

Here's the big question: how to get this car back on the road? I want the car to be kept basically original although disc brakes and an overdrive transmission instead of the Powerglide have been part of the plan someday. So I want a 348. Seems like I have a couple of options. A) Get an...

    Incorrect Block/Head Combination

Can this cooling jacket be seen on the block? Are there holes in the block where the heads mount?? Are there corresponding holes in the heads to get the coolant nearer to the spark plugs??

    Incorrect Block/Head Combination

Bungy, no other cracks that the shop told me about. I haven't seen the block myself. The machinist suspected overheating at some point.
