....went to look at a '65 Corvette Convertible tonight and here's what we found......:rub
...instead of the vin no showing 67 for the rag top it shows 37 which is a coupe....:confused
...and as you can see a Dept of Revenue Assigned Identification Number 14270 which
I figure was their file no.....:scratch but the actual vin reflects a Coupe not a Convertible and after that STATE OF (unknown)......anyone ever see this...:dunno
Seller says grandfather bought car in Toronto in the early 70's..........and has been in storage ever since.
Speculation ranges from typo on the 67/37 to the car having been seized back in the day and sold
later by the IRS.........:rolleyes

Could be just a clerical error in issuing the new VIN tag but the cars value is significantly less just because it has a re-issued VINeven if it's legit. I would check the Canadian GM data source for the build info for that VIN number in both 867 and 437 prefixes. Also check frame VIN stamp to see if it matches. No matter what, it will not bring market value with that VIN and will be an issue for any future buyers.
If you love the car, get a good enough price and never plan to sell, it could be a deal for you.

That VIN is a headache for any future sales of the car. Its a guarantee ever potential buyer will be skeptical and the car will NEVER command what it should

That's a State thing (tag) In Calif a blue tag is applied. It doesn't state the State on it?

What does the motor vehicle registration say on it for a VIN?

Maybe the 14270 is an assigned VIN number by some US state? And the VIN above that was added by someone who didn't know the codes for the coupe and vert? If someone lost the tag off their car and they had a correct VIN on their state motor vehicle registration, wouldn't that just get a new correct VIN tag put back on?

Why does a state issue a new VIN tag? Because the original tag and registration are both missing?

Trim tag looks like an original. Supposedly a partial VIN would be on the frame in front of the driver side rear tire, there is a little plate there held on with screws. Due to surface rust, you may not be able to see it.

Any partial VIN on the front of the block? Vettes had that in 60 or so for high HP motors, like a 300 HP 327.

Whatever you find out, this car is worth a lot less with the non original VIN tag.

Partial VIN is stamped twice on the frame on top drivers side . One should be just about under your left cheek and the other is on top of the kickup just forward of center and should be able to find it with a mirror and good light. They are not stamped very deep so feel for a depressed area to locate the stamp.

It has the outline of Tennessee on the tag, in Missouri you get a tag like that when you build a street rod. That could be a salvage title tag.

Tags, such as that one are attached when the original is either missing, or tampered with. Most cases the car was stolen and the VIN tag was altered. When recovered the State issues a new ID and attaches the new VIN tag, as you see there. OR if the original was mutilated or removed they do the same thing.
